  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Yep. It's really quite good. Jake Gyllenhal does great acting in all his movies. It's got a good vibe to it, probably because it's based on a memoir written by a Gulf War vet. There isn't really any fighting in the whole of the movie, which is accurate of the time frame and location. It's mostly a psychological war movie, delving into the mind of a soldier trying to cope with a reality around them. The central idea seems to be "What do you do when you're taught to kill, but there's nothing to be killed?" and how that messes with your perception of reality and the role you play as an American soldier "protecting" the masses.

I'd certainly suggest it. It's really quite good, very slow and monotonous at times because of the plot occurring, but it tries to move along well with the mood of each character.

I saw it a few weeks ago and should have waited for video. It's a decent movie for what it is...

Gyllanhaal does give a good performance as the kid following up on several generations of military service and realizing he has goofed royally by joining up. It's been awhile since I read the book and I don't remember it quite being as crude as it plays on the big screen. I'm sure this is the most dysfunctional military unit I've ever seen (and my dad was a marine) Life is one big sex joke, sexual innuendo, sex talk, sex play... these guys are about the most sexually obsessed men I've ever seen (and that's remembering I worked in a group home with 25 adolescent boys who were a pretty obscene crew)

It's rather excruciating watching these guys as they try to pass the time, stay on point and have absolutely nothing to do... and as far as this group goes.. there's not a faithful wife/girlfriend in the unit, they have a wall dedicated to unfaithful girlfriends and one guys wife sends him home made porn (of her having sex with someone else... which EVERYONE gets to see when he throws it in the vcr thinking they are watching something quite different)

I can't give a honest opinion. But from what everyone has said here is wrong. I doubt they've ever read the book, or talked with a Vietnam USMC combat Vet. The laungauge was dead on with the way the USMC talks. losta cursing. Losta talk about sex and masturbation. Let's be honest. Those marines over there had nothing to do. They PT 2 times a day, then what else do they have to do? Nothing. So they look at porn and [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse].
Second. If you've seen the movies Apoc Now or Full Metal Jacket, you'd have a better grasp of what the movie is like. Apoc Now was about a solider (I'll use solider here beacuse I'm not sure if he was a Marine.) who with the aid of war, was driven deep in the darkness and thusfore the jungle. He's become a killer and nothing else, and mechanical killer. Now. Full Metal Jacket was the oppisite. FMJ was a marine's relization de-humanization and then entry to humanization. You see this change from the start in boot camp ""Let me hear your warcry, Private Joker!" "AAHHHH"" to at the end of the movie when he hesitates to kill the woman sniper. If you like Apoc Now and disliked FMJ. Don't see this movie. Vise versa.
Third. This movie was very hollywood-ized. Reading the book you know the majority of the events didn't happen. The recruit shot in the head while climbing under the barb-wire. Never in the book, and the media would have had a frenzy over this. Im sorry if you poor *******s believed this. But it never happened. In fact a good majority of the event's and dialouge from the movie was twisted around, and such.
I can't give a completely honest opinion although, they style of how it was made was dead on true.
