  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm wanting to hear more about Vanguard myself because what I've read so far, it's not much like WoW at all other than the interface. I haven't played it so I can't say for sure but what I've read indicates it's more like EQ in gameplay, being more group oriented.

It's also more dangerous and less newbie friendly with corpse runs being part of life. As much trouble as they were in EQ, I never realized how much they added to the immersion and experience of the game. Having to fight your way to the bottom of a dungeon on a quest, knowing that if you die, your body will lie there with your gear until you retrieve it made it more satisfying when you made it.

I'm hoping to pick it up soon but I want to give them a couple months to work out bugs and get the first wave of low levels out of the newbie zones. I also want to read some more reviews so I'll know for sure if it's something I want to spend a lot of time on.

I was in the last leg of the Beta for a while.

Like most said...it's basically Everquest 2.5

The graphics are similiar to EQ2, the questing is pretty much the same...infact, I had to kill rats during my first few levels. :)

There is nothing really new or original here. It's somewhat tedious and the grind is very noticable. A majority of the quests were your typical "kill x creature for x item" And the sound effects and combat were pretty uninspiring as well.

Nothing about it seem to scream "Quit WoW and play this instead!" to me in the slightest.

I'm waiting for Conan.

Ok, I bit the bullet and picked it up. So far I'm really enjoying it as much as for what it isn't as for what it is (which I'm also enjoying). The gameplay is similar to EQ but the influence of newer MMOs can really be seen. No MMO is going to satisfy everyone so it won't be a WoW killer but I think it will get a lot of the people who miss the group dynamic of EQ.

It was just so cool to be running around harvesting and see someone shout out a LFG. I've really missed that aspect of the game and since all the new MMOs have come out, EQ has turned into a high-lvl game and all the lowbie zones are like ghost towns.

I always kind of liked the grind. Not for its own sake but I liked going somewhere and getting in a group and filling a role in the group and when the group composition changed, adapting to make up for it. It was fun to be the main tank with my shadow knight then when a warrior joined go to off-tanking and aggro control or playing my bard and pretty much filling any role that was needed besides tanking.

Hmmm...I need to try a bard.

My husband and I both play Vanguard and really enjoy it. My husband played WoW during a trial period and wasn't very impressed with it, so we didn't purchase that game. We had heard really good reviews and comments about Vanguard well before it was released. Seeing that we were both becoming very unhappy with Star Wars Galaxies, we were more than happy to partake in the Beta for Vanguard when we got the invite :D

I agree that it is similar to EQ2 in a lot of ways, however I do rpefer the graphics on Vanguard a bit better. I enjoy that there are plenty of quests at my level that I can still do solo, and if not so far I have only needed to group with one other person as long as we both work together well strategically :) I am still under a lvl 15, but a lot of that is thanks to my computer having issues and now I am waiting for my new laptop to arrive before I reinstall.

They just did a large patch from my understanding, so I am not sure if that fixed this issue, but there have been a lot of problems with lag since launch. Of course what game doesn't have some kinks to work out right after launch :p The reviews I read before we joined beta was that it was a zone free environment, but despite that claim, I still encounter severe lag when I cross into another zone.

I play a blood mage and a cleric and find that I like both, mostly because I am able to keep myself healed as well as defend myself. Once I get the game reinstalled I would love to find some new friends to play with in game :D

I just got my bard to lvl 7 and absolutely love him. I enjoyed playing a bard immensely on EQ and the Vanguard version doesn't dissappoint. I can see him being very versatile in a group as well as fun to solo. The music system is awesome as well, I like being able to compose my own songs that have whatever effects I want them to have.

I've had some issues with lag and even crashed a couple of times last night so hopefully they will get these problems worked out soon. Otherwise, I really like the game and look forward to some good things from it.

Hey I have a level 25 ranger and 11 warrior on Florendyl (Roleplaying preferred) server. My guild, Chosen Legacy is a mature, family friendly guild but not "Christain" per say. Basic charter is:

The basics of our charter are that we are a family friendly guild created by a group of like minded gamers who believe in having a quality gaming experience in which we all help each other and have fun. Roleplaying is preferred, not enforced. Cursing is prohibited, including implied cursing. (Please refrain). We are a group of mature players and seek to grow our guild into a name that is well liked and untarnished amongst the world in which we live in. Just have fun and play nice, all the rest of the details fall into place after that.

If your interested please send me a /tell

Hey everyone. My buddy Kugin told me about this site and this discussion.

My wife and I along with one other good friend are the leaders of 'Chosen Legacy' on the Floryndyl server. The leadership of the guild is all christian but we do not necessarily bring religion into gameplay or anything like that, but you can see that our rules reflect a christian friendly atmosphere.

As far as the game, I love it. I have been playing MMO's for many years and have really enjoyed everything Vanguard has to offer.

We would love to have any of you over to the server to come hang out and play with us.

Davion Aldure - 26th High Elf Cleric

and my wife

Ariz Windbane - 26th High Elf Ranger

Have a great day!

Thoughts? I'm wondering how this game stacks up to WOW. It looks interesting.
It's a good game, just don't mention WoW in region chat. Especially on PVP servers, lot WoW haters lol

Like others said got lot positive aspects from other MMOs. Different thou for you can be spend your time as crafter or a diplomate instead of questing. Friend doing a quest that allowed him to use a Griffin, pretty nice.

Anyways, Jamin Strife on Varking, shadow Bard. Give me shout if on. If you try to show me "the light" thou your getting mezed lol

Thoughts? I'm wondering how this game stacks up to WOW. It looks interesting.

I like the graphics in WoW better. They're all nice and bubbly. It's very shiny-like. Vanguard's nighttime scene is really dark. Sure, that sets the feeling better, but I really don't like how dark it is.

The interface in Vanguard didn't seem to be any more or less challenging than that of WoW.

The music is probably comparable and maybe even a little better in Vanguard. I actually didn't like the WoW music until the expansion came out. However, all music in these kind of games is repetitive. I'd suggest not choosing a game for this. It is much better to like the other features and then pop in some CDs of your own that you'll be sure to enjoy.

Without a doubt there there is more customizability options for your characters in Vanguard. You can choose everything from the color of their hair to the size and slant of the eyes. There are also more races. There are also more classes (though not by much).

As far as gathering things from the surroundings that is pretty much your usual grindfest. WoW does have more options of items to gather at the moment. Crafting is a bit more tedious in Vanguard as you actually have to think somewhat about what you are doing. You could have crafting problems like sore a sore back or cutting your hand. With WoW you might occasionally fail to harvest something or craft something, but there is no real skill involved in how you can keep such problems from happening in WoW. In Vanguard there is some skill involved. Also, your crafted items are rated.

There is the added element of diplomacy in Vanguard. In WoW you have rep you build, but it usually involves finishes quests or killing certain mobs. Vanguard takes a different approach and adds a mental exercise into the picture. You actually have to win arguments (or parleys as they call them) through a card game. It's quite a bit more involved. It also helps you shape your city's alliances and enemies based on how the players act. Here I'll give you a link that explains it better than I could. http://www3.telus.net/SpirosB/Vanguard/Diplomacy.htm

Questing is fairly similar. You accept a quest. You turn it in. You get rewards. Their dungeons are a bit different in that they are not instances like they are in WoW. Another party could be running the same dungeon with you and you'll see them, and they could potentially steal kills from your mission.

I haven't had a chance to check out the PVP yet and I was playing on a PVP server. I am interested to see how that works. I haven't been PKed so who knows. Oh, and you have to retrieve your body to regain some of the XP you lose when you die. Your gear also takes a hit. ;_;

Mounts are not that big of a deal in Vanguard. You get your first mount at level 10. You don't have to farm like crazy to get there.

Other differences--Vanguard has player housing; you can craft your own furniture; you can own your own boat; you can build a guild house; and you get different clothing for adventuring, harvesting, crafting, diplomacy and some gear that your mount actually uses (saddle, horse shoes, saddlebags, etc); you don't have class specs like in WoW but rather you get to decide which attributes you recieve.

I'm sure I am missing something, but that's the overall gist. I like that there is a more intellectual component to Vanguard, but I love the art and my guildies in WoW. I'm probably crazy enough to keep playing both.
