• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have been on disability for schizophrenia for two or three years now. I also had no trouble getting it really. they go by your doctors recommendation though I think. I have also heard it is hard to get on disability and sometimes take multiple tries. a lawyer may be able to help you :). I guess I just got lucky. it took my sister two or three tries to get disability so you are not alone :). I recommend a lawyer though. I am sure the state welfare program where you live would have lawyer services available.

Hang in there, Schizophrenia alone is enough, dont be surprised if they recommend strongly that you have a representative payee though. someone they will send your money too, someone they expect to control your money. your wife would be excellent for that :).

yes I am on it, but you can say the process wanted me to give up. State of NY is a joke you can say..

I think as someone mentioned it, getting a lawyer is a great idea.

When they turned you down, did you get an apeal? I know in New York if they turn you down you can take them to court, I am unsure if this is the same by you.

I have been on disability for a year or so now. It was really hard to get though. I was denied twice and then I got a lawyer and they delayed the hearing for over a year. I was suggested to write my state rep and when I did within two weeks the rep had replied and a court date set. I had a hearing and answered their questions. The judge origionally said I would have to be further evaluated but within another week had granted the disability. I had been seeing a therapist and psychiatrist for 3 years and had been hospitalized several times. (without insurance medication was hard to come by and lapses put me in the hospital many many times)

I would strongly suggest a lawyer and writing your state reps! I hope that helps and good luck. May God bless you.

Are you all diagnosed Schizophrenic? Paranoid Schizophrenia is at the lower spectrum. Doc says I should be able to lead a happy and productive life. I have continued to be self sufficient, work, have parent duties etc. I never thought of disability or need it. I feel for those of you who need it and can't get it.

I have been on disability for almost 5 years now. I was first diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 16 and had a long recorded history of psychosis and hospitalizations to support my case when my psychiatrist suggested that I apply for disability. I just went through the normal procedures required by Social Security and within 6 months my benefits were started. I was required to have a representative payee at first but I talked with my psychiatrist and he signed off for my benefits to be in my hands. The length of time required for individuals to receive benefits varies. Like I mentioned earlier, I had the full support of my psychiatrist and a well documented history so it was a quick process for myself.

I'm on social security disability. I got it the first try, without a lawyer, for originally Schizophrenia, later diagnosed as SchizoAffective.

What helps is being honest but reflecting some of that Schizophrenia in the interviewing process. Act a little delusional but not overbearing. Make it seem like you need their help. Answer their questions in a way that makes you appear dysfunctional in your normal daily life.

Don't make it seem like you're a functional Schizophrenic that can do without. Just because you have Schizophrenia does not make disability automatic. You have to appear to need it.

Or you could do the easy way and get a lawyer. However, they take a good chunk of your change.

Hello everyone,

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression in 2010. I am going through the process of disability. I think I have to wait 2 years to get a hearing, there hasn't been a date set yet and it's been 3 months since I filed an appeal. I'm worried I won't get it, but I severely need disability. My parents are elderly and will pass away soon and I can't work. I hope I get it. It's hard waiting without any income too. I'm lucky I live with my family. Pray for me. God fulfills my heart from loneliness. I join chat rooms because I am a social creature. I feel guilty for my impatience, but it has to be done. God bless everyone who understands the struggle. I am here for you.
