  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am not a Dr, and certainly don't qualify to give medical advise (where are you Flaglady)
Hello,
Flaglady and I briefly shared our "Nursing resumes" in the medical-forum, here in CF.
Neither of us are Drs., and as you indicate below, Medical drs. often can't help with "diets" anyway.
Because next to no-schooling in this department, they ORDER those Diets of drugs (thanks to the pharmaceutical-industry) -
which as you disclosed yourself already, serves but to add, & compound more symptoms :sigh:, on top of the original symptoms you went to see them for, in the first place.

Was on several meds including Previcid for GERD. I don't take any of those any more.

The physicians just didn't seem to do me any good, so I researched the symptoms myself and have gone to an all natural regime.

I am very thankful to say that I feel better now than I have for a couple of years
.
Well, I'm glad you're feeling Better - Good going!

And I was raised this way in Europe, yet - only partly why now (at 5.5 yrs. of age, LOL) -
I still have my youthful Energies, Flexibility, Strength ... and am learning to gain yet more, thanks to .........

Continue enjoying *Wonderful Health*, Larry

I've been on a diet all my life ;). I've always eaten very healthy .
I walk several miles (at least three and usually five) every day.
However, I've decided that I'll never be the weight I'd like to be,

I'd love to take off about 20 pounds, but really am at a loss as to why I'm even too heavy, since I don't snack, don't eat heavy desserts and stay active. HELP!!!
Hi Valentine,
Well, as you can see (I've hi-lighted this for you, from your own posting)
you are creating your own challenge here.

So, just simply decide *now :) that "I am deciding now that my mind is free to adjust it's body-weight to just the right weight for me to enjoy Optimal-health, perhaps even ..." (state your desired weight).

You see, (this part of you that beats your heart, breathes for you, custom-designs whatever genes you may want next, yadda, yadda) - yes, your own mind also can control your weight, IF you choose to communicate with it. Try it, you may well like it! :D

 Thanks, Sk8. Congratulations, Larry, on your successful journey toward improved health. I wanted to edit my original post, but alas, time fled and I had no more left for CF last night. Anyway, a little over 4 yrs ago my husband had a cardiac incident that totally changed our lifestyle (eating-wise anyway). I went to a nutritionist and we radically changed our eating habits to eliminate all trans-fats, saturated fats and placed emphasis on good fats only. That's when we gave up (of our own free will) red meats and fatty foods. Because I have mild hypoglycemia and would like to not develop type 2 diabetes, I eliminated almost all sugar from my diet. We use only whole grains and for the most part eat organic whenever possible. Portion control is always an issue and we try to eat meats in portions no larger than a deck of playing cards. My hat's off to Larry for maintaining the control and for taking charge of his life. One thing that most people think about diets is that food on diets is not tasty. This is not at all the case. Simple cooking always tastes better without the heavy fats and additives. I have a little herb garden and use rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil and parsley from the herb garden in many of my dishes. MMMMM=good. Unfortunately, heart healthy often means high carbs, so for me the carbs we eat is probably the bigger issue due to my particular chemistry. I intend to stay on the path I'm on since it is a healthy one. Ohhhhh -- the calories: 1500 per day for me and 2000 per day for my husband. I'd be hard pressed to do everything I do and cut back on the calories anymore. Perhaps Larry can help me on cutting down on the carbs and adding something else that would be better for me. I'm all for being supportive of each other in seeking out healthier eating and healthier lifestyles.

Larry, remember to try and increase your intake of water also.

Yes - That is something that had been difficult for me because I drink so many other liquids. But it is important. Also one thing I did not mention is that for the most part we have eliminated anything made with white flower, including noodles, spaghetti etc... The are whole grain alternatives that do just fine.

:D:D:D This thread has fast become one of my favorites!!! I'll have to share today I was feeling a little bit on the "slow" side and considered not taking my long walk, but then thought, well . . . I posted that I walk every day, so I'd better be responsible. ^_^ silly, huh? Anyway, we also switched over to whole grain everything, including spaghetti noodles back when we made the big heart-healthy decision. Anymore when we do happen to eat out, the food tastes mealy and soooo buttery/greasy. Yech.. (hee hee) Today I tried a new (to me) oatmeal and simply LOVED it. I got steel cut oats instead of rolled oats. It takes a longer time to cook, but oh, wow wow wow was it worth it!!! MMMMMM -- so nutty and sooo filling. I was shocked when lunchtime rolled around that I was not very hungry at all. I had just a small green salad and felt full. Eating oatmeal often at our age is a very good idea. A friend of mine switched from her regular breakfast over to oatmeal and lowered her cholesterol by 30 points in only a month. I'm already looking forward to that steel-cut oatmeal in the morning!!! :) :p Tonight we'll have lime marinated salmon filet for dinner along with some steamed snow peas and a little wildrice. Yikes, I'm ready for din din. :p I'm attempting to attach a thumbnail of my last mountain climbing expedition out in Los Alamos, New Mexico late last fall. I sent this pic to my granddaughter and she e-mailed me back: wow, gram. I didn't know you and Papa could climb mountains. :D:cool:

You all are an inspiration. I have put on a few extra pounds over the last year (maybe a few more then a few:blush: ) and really need to lose them because I know I would feel better but I have a weakness for snacking while watching or reading in the evenings.:sigh: I do eat pretty healthy and rarely go out to eat especially to fast food chains when I do I too find the food to taste very greasy and heavy. I can't stand the fast food frenchfries anymore they have a terrible after taste to me. I know I need to cut down on sweets and eat more fruits. Now I will leave and see if I can find some willpower.:help: :(

PS Valentine. Nice pics.

I am enjoying the discussion as well. Great pics Val. Mountain climbing WOW you impress me. Oatmeal is good bulky food. Anything like that that if very fibrous is good for you and your digestive system. I occasionally use Flax seed and Wheat germ. My staple though is unprocessed Wheat Bran, lots of it!!!

 ^_^ ^_^ I bought a pedometer, but believe it or not couldn't figure out how to set the silly thing. Apparently you have to take a certain number of steps and press a button and then on and on. I finally just decided to just walk and forgetaboutit. :) Thanks for the comments on the pics. I'm really hoping we get to do some nice climbing over the spring/summer. Out in New Mexico it was nice because there is little humidity and even though at the high elevations the air was thin (it took me a couple/days to get used to it), climbing was much nicer without the humidity killing me. {{wipes brow thinking about it}} Of course I also have to watch out for those sneaky snakes and we often see them around, but I always  pray really hard that I see them before they see me ;). I've been climbing hills a couple of times a week in order to strengthen my legs annnnnnd luuuuungs to get ready for summer. This morning I made the marvelous discovery that I've dropped a couple of pounds since last week, so maybe I'm on a bit of a roll (and hopefully will get rid of a fat roll) :D Larry and everyone, your encouragement is much appreciated and any little tips anyone wants to share will be greatly welcomed, believe me. Blessings to everyone and I've prayed that God's wonderful peace will be with each of you today!! :prayer:
