Topics dealing with computers and technology, comic books, role playing games, classical music, artificial intelligence, film, anime, video games, manga, science fiction, and fantasy literature have become heavily associated with nerds, as have conventions relating to these various topics.

I guess I qualify under all of those. Except now as a Christian I don't know of much any decent anime to watch.

I'm married to a nerd, he likes his computers, video games and comic books. Then again I like my computer, video game and comic books so it's fair. :) We're both into Sci Fi and read a lot of books based on that but I'm the only classical music fan...wait a minute...My husband's married to a nerd too! ;)

Nerds are not necessarily men and women who are super into computers and math.

I would also classify nerds as people who were into poetry, reading, scholastic pursuits, romantic and quiet music, including easy listening and classical. People who were never into drinking or smoking. Who liked romantic and family-oriented movies.

I married a nerd and I love him. I was also a quasi-nerd in high school and college.

Some of the computer "geeks" can be absolutely crazy violent within their brains. They may be quiet on the outside, but seethe on the inside. These are the kind of people who can go postal, IMO.

I hate labels. Maybe in this world's idea -- we both are nerds. We both are intellectuals and love refined things, but we also like a bunch of other things.

My husband and I have a wide variety of interests and can get along in many different types of groups. I graduated Valedictorian and was always considered a "brain". I act appropriately in whatever the situation. I consider myself sexy, intelligent, athletic, fun, etc -- same with my husband. Is that nerdish?

I don't think that's nerdish.

Good to know you are so comfortable with yourself. :)

My husband likes Sci-Fi, but I wouldn't consider him a nerd for it.

I did IT work for 7 years, and part of the reason I got out of the field was because I wasn't a nerd and got sick of dealing with such. They're just not on my level.

I would say we are both geeks, him more so than I, but we both qualify. He grew up collecting comic books, playing board games with his friends like Fortress America and reading books such as LOTR before LOTR was "cool". He works in IT and has been focused on computer technology from an early age. He also has a large facination with history and almost became a history teacher instead of going into IT until he realized he would never want to teach in high school the way public school is now.

I grew up getting very good grades, loved to read and playing lots of boardgames and card games with family, although my games were probably considered more 'traditional'. Once I got to college and took my first computer course I was hooked and we met on the internet that year. We did instant messaging via talk daemons before it was ever deemed 'instant messaging'!

At this point in our lives, not only is my husband still working in IT, but we are 1/2 of a company that publishes independent games. Most of our games are strategy games in nature and many of them are recreations and simulations of past wars/future wars and some are fantasy (mythical type characters). Definitely very geeky I would think. We go to gaming conventions because of this business as well. Personally, we own probably around 20 domains on the internet and web design/software creation is one of our passions.

I guess there's no getting out of it, we're definitely geeks!:D

I tease my husband about being nerdy, but he's really not. He does love computers...his degree is in Programming/Computer Science and his job is as working on networks and other computer related issues. He does read a lot, too. But, I guess according to THAT definition, that's where it ends.

My husband is very active and athletic and not at all into things like anime (he thinks it's weird), comic books, or video games (though he will play occassionally with me or the kids). He's a very physical, hands on type person. He's not all soft and mushy, either. He wrestled through high school, played football in both high school and college, and then went into the Marine Reserves (Infantry), before 4 years later going active duty in the Army (also Infantry).

He's a total jock with a huge brain...that's the perfect way to describe him.

And even though I was one of the smart kids in school, I've always been very athletic as well. Softball from the time I was 6, and tennis all through high school and beyond. I'm the dreamy, artsy type, lol...with a little bit of an athlete in me, too.

So we're an odd combination. It keeps things interesting though. :D

Sounds like a geek to me. Nerd to me is more like...
...people who were into poetry, reading, scholastic pursuits, romantic and quiet music, including easy listening and classical. People who were never into drinking or smoking. Who liked romantic and family-oriented movies.
I'm married to one of these. Totally nerd. Totally hot.

Gee people, the 'definintions' of nerds seem so broad, yet at the same time conjures up the image of 'quazi-less-than-ideal' man or woman.

So tell me, anyone, what's an "un-nerd" then?

I do or am most of the things/qualities mentioned thus far, but have never considered myself as a nerd, at least not by my definition of a nerd.
