  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

anyone knows a good programm to convert LD Video to HD?

Laser Disk?
That's what I thought when I read the title. From the context, though, I think it meant 'Low Definition' - as opposed to HD being 'High Definition'.

The short answer is, it depends. The factors that affect it are how clean the source is and what resolution, what the target resolution will be, and the resizing algorithm used.

A clean (or reasonably clean) source that's at DVD resolution, upscaled to 720p using Lanczos or Spline methods will still look fine (1080p should look decent), albeit not as sharp as native 720p or 1080p content. eedi3 is another option to look at.

On the other hand, if the source is a badly macroblocked 352x240 capture from VHS, and upscaled using a Point resizer, it's gonna look like crap.

i guess what i am talking about is to make something that is not more VHS quality into something more high quality/higher resolution.

Quality and resolution are technically separate. Quality is [mostly] subjective, and you can get away with certain things by playing around with filtering after resizing to whatever resolution you want (or resize over desired resolution -> filter -> resize down to desired resolution).

Again, it really depends on what the use-case will be. Playback on an HDTV? I would generally go with only scaling VHS-type material to DVD resolution (which is either 480p or 576p, depending on whether you're in NTSC land* or PAL land**, respectively), authoring a DVD with it, and then just letting the Blu-ray player handle the rest if necessary.

*North America and Japan, mostly; maybe some Caribbean nations too.
**Nearly everywhere else.

If something was recorded in standard definition you can't make it look HD. It is only possible to go down from HD to SD, but not back up and still have it look the same.
