Hey all's!! SO I am going to be moving to England for a semester within the next two years to go to Capernwray Hall, the England Torchbearers chapter, to learn more about God's word and to fulfill a dream of living in England.

I was wondering if there are any members here from that beautiful country and if you are then I would love to make connections before I get there so I'm not so alone.

I'd love to answer any questions you may have about it. :)

Blessings!

I'm the wrong person to ask about haunts, I went through Carnforth once to get to a friends house and the rest of my time I spent at work, walking along Morecambe Bay or fraternising with the locals in the pub as that was the only place local for after work fraternisation which wouldn't require an expensive taxi back from Lancaster/Preston ;).

I'm originally from Yorkshire and now in Scotland via Ascot (nr London)
Lancaster is OK, Hadrien's Wall a let down IMHO. You should try to go to Glasgow - but if anyone offers you a Glasgow Kiss - say no. ;)
Pubs are like pubs anywhere. Some good, some bad.
I personally like York and York Minster for the religious experience so you might want to check it out - and Canterbury Cathedral if it's not too far (not a day trip).

As AI T mentioned, there's a mix. We tended to go to The Smugglers in Morecambe, because it was very close to my flat of the time and had an in-house ukulele band. Which is brilliant, if you like ukulele bands and small, very local, pubs. You will soon get to know, through local talk, which ones to avoid.

Lancaster has a bigger selection, but as a university city it can be fairly rambunctious. Not to the extent of Birmingham, Leeds or Preston, but still up there. I remember walking home after missing the last bus and getting excitedly leaped on by a student who mistook me for a member of his pub crawl team, but generally it's all rather brilliant.

There are plenty of museums and a steady night life, some people will regularly go up to Scotland for the weekend. I love Edinburgh,

If you're keen on castles, Lancaster Castle is quite nice. Similarly if you can get down to London I'd recommend a trip around Lambeth Palace, I'm not sure if you'll get quite the same treatment as I did on my induction day but it really is rather splendid. Beautiful rooms, and a whole lot of history. I think as a non-NCI staff member you'd probably have to pre-book yourself on a guided tour, and I think it's something like £15 each, but if you like that sort of thing it is lovely. Plus the carpets are really nice. Really nice. Like walking on clouds.

I'll second coming down to the glorious South East for a visit to Canterbury (not that I'm biased). Probably best to make a weekend of it, the 3+ hour trip is a little long on an often crowded train, but definitely worth it.

Really it depends on the sort of things you enjoy, I'm touching 30 and tend to hang around with people in the 40+ range nowadays, so my idea of fun may be out of touch ;).

I lived in the UK for about a year and a half and I still miss the UK from time to time. If you ever crave fastfood you should (not surprisingly) stay away from McDonalds and the likes. Instead you should go to one of those places that specialize in pasties. Who could have imagined that the UK is the home of the most brilliant fast food under the sun? That stuff is absolutely wicked!

You're crazy. You live in Texas and you WISHED that you lived in England? Haha!

I'm the least "American" American ever, I was born in the wrong country.

If you want to try a pasty then I think there's only one shop that sells proper pasties in the Lancaster area, the Cornish Bakery in Lancaster itself. Other bakeries attempt pasties, but they do pasties the way they should be done ;).

Lancashire does however have a lot to offer in the way of pies...

Do you like curry? Believe me that the curries in Britain are better than the slop I've tried overseas. They are amazing.

Don't know if you are vegetarian or not but you can get a Thali which is basically a taster meal. There's a good Indian restaurant in Lancaster as I remember. Get a Peshwari naan as well.

If you get to Southampton (though I wonder why you would) you must go here: www.indianmelody.net. The food here is like nothing I've ever eaten....
