Oh, and I almost forgot... Buttered toast with Marmite is Britain's greatest gift to humanity! I might be biased, though! :p

It annoys me a lot that I cannot get hold of Marmite where I live! :(

I am sorry to hear that the disgusting mess that is Marmite has rotted your brain.

I shall pray for you.

I'm originally from Yorkshire and now in Scotland via Ascot (nr London)
Lancaster is OK, Hadrien's Wall a let down IMHO. You should try to go to Glasgow - but if anyone offers you a Glasgow Kiss - say no. ;)
Pubs are like pubs anywhere. Some good, some bad.
I personally like York and York Minster for the religious experience so you might want to check it out - and Canterbury Cathedral if it's not too far (not a day trip).

Well since am a weegie no one has ever said that EVER! SIGH

:o

But Marmite chocolate is so delicious, and good for you! Just like Marmite rice cakes, crisps and licked from the spoon!

I always used to think a Glasgow Kiss was something lovely, then my innocence was shattered. It was a less devastating version of discovering what a Chelsea Smile was :(

Oh, that's another wonderful thing about coming to the UK... picking up the lingo.

I have never seen it, I think its just one of those folk lores that happen. Actually Glasgow is voted the FRIENDLIST CITY IN THE WORLD!!!!! for example if you need to find somewhere and stop a stranger and ask for directions a typically weegie will come along with you, just to make sure you get the right place, I have done this myself on my occasions

What is the Glasgow kiss and the smile thing about?

In the UK, a headbutt is sometimes referred to as a Glasgow kiss. This is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the city of Glasgow's violent reputation

A Glasgow smile (also known as a Chelsea smile, or a Glasgow, Chelsea, or Cheshire grin) is a wound caused by making small cuts on the corners of a victim's mouth, then beating or stabbing him or her until the muscles in the face contract, causing the cuts to extend up the cheeks to the victim's ears. This leaves a scar in the shape of a smile, hence the name

Oh dear Lord!! I'll take heed and be cautious of those things.

I very highly doubt that you would get either, and as I said I have never seen anyone been given or asked about a Glasgow Kiss........ I haven't ever met anyone personal that's had a Chelsea smile either, and I think this is mostly due to the involvement in gangsters/yobs and drug dealers etc unless you are wanting to be a gangster or become a drug dealer am sure you will be grand

You'd have to be Very Peculiar to enjoy this. You seemed so normal as well MiniEmu....

Glasgow is a fine city hence my recommendation, even though I resorted to weak clichés to have a laugh.. (nothing new there)

Some of the friendliest folk I've met are Weegies - just don't wear green or blue on match day ;) (and I've probably got that wrong since I'm half-baked!)

Hey all's!! SO I am going to be moving to England for a semester within the next two years to go to Capernwray Hall, the England Torchbearers chapter, to learn more about God's word and to fulfill a dream of living in England.

I was wondering if there are any members here from that beautiful country and if you are then I would love to make connections before I get there so I'm not so alone.

I'd love to answer any questions you may have about it. :)

Blessings!

I am in England. I think my daughter is about your age, and she is a student as well. I don't know Lancaster and we are a distance from there, but I think you will have no problems making friends.

Take no notice of the scare stories; every country has its darker side but on the whole England is a good place to live for just about anyone at all. That is why so many people like to visit, and why so many move here.

Anyone at all wondering what to do to make friends in a new place, the answer is easy; find a local church. That is where the best people will be found. (Together with a few not so good.)

I wish you well in your plans.

Half baked, Weegies, Match Day? What does all that mean?

A weegie is a Glaswegian. Match day is usually on a Saturday, but could be any other day; the day a football match is played in any given town. And half baked can mean an idea that is not really very good (only half cooked, so fine on the outside but stodgy and indigestible in the middle) or by extension a person who has such an idea.

As everyone else has said, you won't need to worry really. At worst if you're out late on Friday night, in a rowdy part of town, you may get caught up in Black Eye Friday and even then you'll just be stuck watching people get a wee bit handy. It's not so bad. I've lived in some areas others consider shady and have come away with fairly pleasant experiences :).

But it goes so well with salt liquorice! You'd have to be crazy not to enjoy salty, delicious things.

I'm English, I live near London. :)
Good luck in Lancashire, its ruddy cold up there!
BUT lush views and clean air. I was going to say it was pretty chilly in London today, but figured that's just a sign I'm now a soft southerner :(.

Marmite is the best
Pubs are almost always alright

A woman of taste.
And yeah, most pubs are okay. It's very rare you walk into one and find yourself walking back out again.

Basically you're (hopefully) going to really, really enjoy your time here.

Lancaster is not cold, not at all. Southerners are just soft like marshmallows. Come to Aberdeen and you'll feel bitter! (Apart from today which is quite warm)

More Marmite crazies coming out the woodwork... :(
