• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I had gotten into a ski accident a week and a half ago. I went to the hospital and a few days after that, I went to my primary care doctor. I have no one to tell me what my treatment options should be.

According to the hospital discharge papers, I was supposed to be able to go back to work within 2 days but there's no way because I can't put any weight on my leg.

I have been trying to go see an orthopedic but, since I have Medicaid... am having a difficult time and the earliest any of the orthopedics can see me is April but, I have serious injuries. I also have a dislocated shoulder that is still popping out.

Starting last night, I started to massage my calf, and started to lightly start walking on my left leg (w/ the help of the crutches) --- i did the same thing today but today, I went outside instead w/ the crutches and walked lightly on my bad leg for less then 5 min then came inside.

Instead of going into all the details of what i'm feeling. My main question is, what are the steps I should do to get my leg/calf better so I can begin to start walking again?

I tore the gastrocnemius muscle in my calf and it just feels really bad. It had been feeling better which is why i figured on doing some small stretches and to start walking on it but, is it too soon?

Should I Not be walking on it yet or what?

Now, after walking outside earlier, my leg is really hurting me and i don't want to walk on it at all. I know if I went for physical therapy, that would be difficult and would hurt so, I figured I'd start my own physical therapy and do some stretches and light walking.

I don't know what i'm supposed to do or how I'm supposed to take care of my calf in the right way.

I looked online but, it's not helping much.

I wish I had an orthopedic who could exactly tell me what to do.

Can your primary care doctor refer you?

You may also be helped by physical therapy. In many cases Medicaid will pay for a certain number of visits.

My physical therapist has also told me they give a 71% discount for self-pay, so that might be a possibility if Medicaid won't cover it.

My primary care doctor has actually been working on 2 lists the orthopedic I had wanted to go to. He gave her 2 lists of orthopedics and she's going every single one of those doctors to see if they will be able to see me in a short period of time. So far, no luck.

I was thinking of physical therapy but, I need to see an orthopedic first to know if the tear is healing correctly or how bad the tear really is but, being that I haven't seen one yet, I'm trying to guess what to do as I'm not sure if now is the right time to try and start walking or, if I need to rest/ice and elevate for a longer period of time.

I don't know how else to find an orthopedic to go to who will be able to see me Soon.

I wish I knew what else to suggest. Can your primary order the relevant x-rays, imaging from some place with someone who will give you a preliminary review for PT?

But your doctor would know these ins and outs better than I do. I admit, I'm struggling to see three specialists I need and time may be of the essence.

I don't suppose the ER would give you any additional info since they've seen you?

I'm not sure about the wisdom of seeking medical advice in such a way, but I have resorted to professional forums for other kinds of advice. I doubt you'd be able to get anything other than perhaps generalized advice, or help in finding help, with all the liabilities involved, but maybe it could help? I usually search relevant terms in quote marks, along with the word "forum". What I like about forums is that, being conciliar in a way, you can usually get all sides of an issue, including relevant cautions.

Prayers for you.

If your doctor can't get you in to see a specialist, and is unable to do anything for you, your only other option is to go to the ER and they might be able to get you in sooner to see a specialist due to the severity of the injury.
