We lived in Pensacola, FL when Ivan came a knockin' and I can say it definately wasn't fun. My wife and son were able to ge to Missouri to wait it out but my job required that I stay.

Three days without running water, a week without power, two weeks without phone, and almost a month without cable service. All of those aren't too bad to deal with with the exception of running water. That's tough.

We lost most of our trees, the roof, both garage door, and a flower garden. We moved a month later.

My mother lives close to pensacola also and just dealt with Dennis although it wasn't nearly as strong as Ivan. She's moving now too.

My family and I had lived in Florida only 3 weeks last year when the first of 3 hurricanes came through (Charlie, Frances, & Jeanne). They were all different, but in each case we had lots of wind and lots of rain. The most distinctive thing about the wind was it was constantly fast; it didn't gust fast and slow like a normal wind. We lost electricity for 3-4 days with Frances & Jeanne, which meant no air conditioning or fans. The best thing about hurricanes is they're predictable now, not like the earthquakes in California where we moved from!

I grew up on the Gulf Coast and later moved to the Florida Keys so I've been through a couple of them.

Camille - I was a baby. There's a newspaper picture I have of my dad walking through water up to his chest, holding me over his head.

Andrew - I was drunk and holed up in Captain Tony's.

Hugo - I was a paramedic in the Philly Suburbs. We were called to Atlantic city to help evacuate an old folks home.

Isabel - I wished I was drunk and holed up in Captain Tony's.

No i havent - though i admit im curious. Wouldnt want to live in a prone area though.

My thoughts still with the people of New Orleans and America. Wish i could help :(

I also want to see tornadoes. We have them in our country but not like Tornado alley types. Weve had good lightning stroms lately. Saw a good one on a small boat trip not long back. Over my own town.

My co-worker and I were just discussing that...we both thoroughly enjoy hurricanes (so long as they don't surpass category 3 or 4), and he's never seen a tornado... I have, and I definitely prefer hurricanes...tornados are just evil.

We had Hurricane Juan in Nova Scotia on September 29th, 2003. It was a category 2 which seems like a baby compared to the ones hitting the Gulf states lately, but it was BIG for us! I never seen such destruction before. It was devastating really. It was recorded as the most damaging storm in the modern history of Halifax. Let me see if I can find some pictures......

'Have now... sort of.

Rita just skimmed by Houston, delivering only gusty winds of up to 75 mph and about an inch of rain, not to mention gridlock on every freeway.

Actually, the last one I was in was Allison, which wasn't really a hurricane, but a strong tropical storm that parked itself over Houston long enough to flood the entire city and surrounding area. When it was done, the most common phrase around here was "You can't get there from here."

Son-cerely,
Nathan Powers

Never been in a hurricane. But last night we had one heck of a wind storm that scared the daylights (actually nightlights :p ) out of hubby and myself! Turns out it was just an autumn storm. But with all the wind we had and it just sounded so awful....I can't even imagine what it's like to be in a hurricane.

Been in several starting with Camille when i was 4, but I still remember how the wind howled. The next one that I remember was Fredric. He was awful. He came right up the Alabama/Mississippi line. Where I live, we got a lot of damage from Ivan, with Katrina we had a total of 30 trees down 2 on our house, 1 on my car, 2 on the barn, one that flattened our chicken pen. we use to have a gorgeous yard, but all we have now is big holes where BIG trees use to be. Mississippi got a lot more damage and worse winds from Katrina than New Orleans did, and we live on the Alabama/Mississippi line so we got a lot too. The first tornado warning came at 6:00 am and at 2 am the next morning you could still hear the wind howling. We were outside standing on our back porch watching the trees come down. We were looking to the right watching the one falling on my car, when one hit the back porch from the left side. My daughter said I looked like a cartoon character running in place because my feet wouldn't take me anywear, but when they got their traction she said I looked like the road runner. I was running so fast I don't even remember turning the door knob to go inside. It is funny now when I think about it, but it wasn't then.

Can someone tell me how to get the little faces to add to my posts?
