  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm crocheting right now. I'm making a shawl in lionbrand homespun in the color "gothic" which is a really dark purple. It's a beautiful yarn and very soft and comfortable in the hands. Some say that it's not good to crochet with since it splits so easily but I don't mind.

Hi everyone, I'm brand spankin' new here.

I'm Marie Anne and one of my favorite hobbies is crocheting. I make baby blankets, full sized afghans, lapghans, scarves, kitchen sets (dishcloths, hot pads, placemats). I'm working on afghans and scarves now for a group I barter with and will be getting some nice Christmas presents.

I like to crochet. My favorite projects are hats and scarves, though I also do afghans.

I'm working on a baby blanket right now.. it's on my desk next to me. It's for my future sister in law (my fiance's sister). It's blue pink and white and turning out to be my best one yet. (It's only my 3rd project completed without the help of my grandma! The other two were my fiance's scarf and a different baby blanket)

Next I'm going to make myself a scarf out of thick red yarn.

After that I'm deciding if I want to try to make a matching hat or if I want to switch over and try to learn to knit.. a girl I work w/ knits and it looks so fun and easy! :)

You go girl!! I know exactly how you feel. I started crocheting just a few years ago and I still get so happy when I can start and complete a project without my mom's input!! And then! I get so psyched at how great they come out! It's not arrogance, I think it's surprise!

If you want some easy projects go to www.lionbrand.com They have some great free patterns. OH! If you can double crochet they have this really nice prayer shawl. It's just a double crochet. I used Lion Brand jiffy yarn and made a few for my sisters last Christmas. Look for the link for free patterns to the left. You can even search for the prayer shawl. They may show it in the knitting patterns but just scroll down for the crochet instructions. Have fun!

I have made this shawl a few times but I don't knot all the fringe myself. I get other people who know the person the shawl is for to say a prayer and tie a knot. That way the one it is for has a visual representation of how many people are praying for them.

Over the weekend I made 2 hat and scarf sets as Christmas gifts. I have another scarf started, a blanket started and a shrug that I am knitting (I'm not real good at this so it may take awhile). I still have a CareBear to make. A friend is supposed to pick up the FunFur for the scarves her daughters want me to make them too. I also need to find something I can stash in my travel bag in case we need to make a quick trip to PA in the near future (my Dad and my FIL are both in poor health).

I enjoy crocheting things especially in bright colours.
Unfortunately there's not much you can do with bright orange or bright pink table mats!

These sound like they would be great for a picnic or kid's birthday party. Also they would brighten up a rainy day or a tray for someone sick in bed.

Thanks for the link! I'm excited to have a pattern for some mittens...

now I just need to learn how to follow a pattern!

The stitches I know are:

single
double
1/2 double
triple

that's it.. if there are anymore I don't even know of them. haha

The only thing I know how to read in a pattern is 'yo' means yarn over. haha

so if anyone has tips on the language used in a pattern it'd be appreciated!

Thanks,
Carina

PHEW!! I just went thru the bags of stuff I've done for Christmas to see What I have. The tally to date is:

1 table runner
1 poncho
1 pair of mittens
3 pillows
8 hats
19 scarves
24 doilies

I have only 2 gifts left to do--a teddy bear for my niece and something for my Mom. My husband is quite impressed.

I crochet, but not very well. My projects tend to fluctuate. They get wider and then thinner and then wider again.

I just finished a scarf. And my grandmother gave me a crochet book and the only thing I have been able to figure out was the flowers so I have like 20 of them.

Crochet flowers are so cool. I love them! I should make some more. Lion brand yarn just put a pattern for a rosette on their web site. It's really very cute but perhaps your book already has one similar to that. There are quite a few good flower patterns on Stargazer's Web site although you have to search around a lot. I want to make a pile of flowers and then attach them to a totebag. I also like putting them on hats, which is kind of trendy right now. Some are putting them on the ends of scarves, or even on chockers.

I wanted to mention that the reason your work might be fluctuating in width is due to the turning chain and which stitch to put your hook in when you start your first row. There is a rule about this, although there are variations in different styles of doing it. Here is one from a web site called crochet memories:

Turning Chains:

At beginning of rows, a certain number of chains are required to bring work up to the level of the stitch that is to be made. The number of chains depends on the height of the stitch and usually replaces the first stitch of each new row. When instructions place turning chains at the end of a row, turn work right to left to avoid twisting chain unless you're left handed, then you'd turn workd from left to right. Below is a guide for the number of chains required to equal the stitch height:
  • Single crochet: chain 1 to turn, insert hook in 1st stitch of new row.
  • Half double crochet: chain 2 to turn, insert hook in 2nd stitch of new row.
  • Double crochet: chain 3 to turn, insert hook in 2nd stitch of new row.
  • Triple crochet: chain 4 to turn, insert hook in 2nd stitch of new row.
Variations apply to all basic rules and will depend on what you prefer in your work.

Hope that helps.

Celtie,

Thanks for the link on how to read a pattern.. I just printed a pattern out from the jiffybrand website someone posted here earlier, and used your pattering reading site to 'translate' the pattern to English.. I will be working on it as soon as I get my yarn! I'm so excited.. my first project from a real pattern! Yeah :)

Thanks again!
