Ok, I did a search and found this
http://www.nfu.org.uk/stellentdev/groups/public/documents/ianda/avianinfluenzaupdat_ia43550231.hcsp
Facts about Avian Influenza

A) Avian Influenza is primarily a disease of birds. The high pathogenic H5N1 AI strain has not shown the ability to move easily between humans.

B) Poultry and game is safe to eat. The Food Standards Agency considers that the outbreak of avian flu does not pose a food safety risk for UK consumers. This is because the risk of catching the disease in humans is from being in close contact with live poultry that have the disease and not through eating poultry. There have been no reports of people handling poultry meat getting infected. The WHO has also advised that there is no health risk from well-cooked poultry meat or from eggs.

C) Farmers have been on high alert since July, as the UK recently experienced a case of Newcastle disease - another viral disease of birds. This disease was contained and did not spread to any other farms. The NFU and Defra are advising poultry farmers that clothes, vehicles and boots should be cleaned and disinfected as appropriate.

D) For the past two years there has been an ongoing survey of wild and domestic bird populations. The UK has not recorded any instances of Avian Influenza during this time.

Yeah,until today!

What is it with the UK and all the freaking disease?! They had the Plague several times in their long history, they've had Mad Cows for as long as I can remember, and now they've got an outbreak of avian flu and newcastle disease! Is it because they're an island?!
But in answer to your question no I'm not particularly concerned. The reason why is 1. I love Chicken and eggs. 2. If I catch avian flu and die...well then that's in the Lords hands and after the fact I will be too! :) 3. Remember SARS? Yeah, the mass epidemic wasn't so massive. Why was it "a mass epidemic"? Because the media inflated it to something it wasn't. This could be a similar situation. I'm just not wigging out yet.

You are so right. It is SOoooooo easy for the media to whip people in such a frenzy. Many people can not think for themselves. They have a herd mentality and follow and believe whatever they're told. It's amazing. God's people should be able to discern things like this. Of course I wouldn't purposely eat infected chicken or eggs, but I'm not going to stop eating chicken or eggs completely because of this. God's people are not to walk in fear.

Honey,

Avian Flu has been happening in the US for a loooong time. Each time, they kill all he poultry affected by the outbreak.

Let's see, I think it was two years ago here in VA that they had an outbreak. There is a quarantine so that we can't ship birds across state lines.

We raise our own poultry and we don't allow people to visit our poultry, which has a lot to do with how it is spread 'from one farm to another'.

NJ, I think had an outbreak a couple of years back too.

The think about the strain in the UK is that it has jumped species. That is the only reason why it is scary. Personally, I'm ready to meet Jesus and I don't have the time or money to waste being afraid of something that might or might not happen.

And yes, the media is blowing it out of proportion. My suspicions are, that there is something else going on that they aren't telling us about and THAT could worry me but if it kills me I will still end up in the same place when I die.

I would personally be more concerned about Chimera medicine. And for anybody on here with a medical/legal background that would be interested in helping me word a proposed bill, please PM me.

I'm not worried about it either. If I did, then I would have to worry about; ecoli, west nile virus, infections, and who knows what else. Like in most cases, you will worry longer than the actual even anyway, and then it will be for nothing.

Besides, Tyson Chicken is down the road from me, so if anything happens to our supply of chicken I will know.

And yeah the FDA has made several errors, but who doesn't? We put our trust in the automobile makers everyday when we get in our vehicle. Put our trust in contruction workers when we enter buildings. Put our trust in doctors, surgeons, and dentists, and L-rd knows how many many bad mistakes they make. I don't anyone would leave their house if they knew of all the risks. Besides that G-d graces us everyday, when most don't know it. Did you know our body produces cancer cells that our body eradicates everyday? Our heart stops at least once everyday? G-d is AWESOME

Just don't be kissing any chickens - the virus is in their saliva.

I am not afraid to eat poultry or eggs. There is no point of being pananoid. If everytime a news disease was mentioned we would not eat anything. Think about it if you beef you might get mad cow disease (and yes they did find a cow in the US with it), people these days say if you eat chicken you might get avian flu, and if you drink unpasturized apple cider you might get e-coli.
As far as I am consered I am more afraid of wild birds infecting us was avian flu. You know why wild birds migrate long distances and they bring diseases with them when they migrate. The other thing is it is a lot harder to kill wild birds if they are infected, then than a flock of chickens.

P.S. The way I understand it the avian flu that came from China is differnt than the one in North America.

Ummmmm....I'm a farmer....you can't kill this by cooking it. It passes by any secretion, it only now mutating from bird to human, and the liklihood is very very small at the moment. HOWEVER, the chicken that you eat DOES contain 600 times and up to 800 times the normal amount of female growth hormone. Yep. They call it "Growth Enhancing antibiotics" and every chicken you eat from fast food or market has been injected or fed it.

I wouldn't worry so much about the flu.....get nonhormone chicken, especially for your children. It is changing their bone structure (21 year old bones on an 8 year old child), is reeking havic with their reaching adulthood physically while mentally unable to make those decissions.

You CAN find it, it is just a little more expensive. You don't have to go organic...that is highly overrated these days as the label is frequently abused. Go nonhormone. The flu is still just a scare. But you eat excessive hormones every time you eat a market bird.

leia, your post was very interesting. I didn't realize that cooking it wouldn't kill it.....ummmm.......that's something to think about.
I believe the reason why she said cooking it wouldn't kill the virus is because the virus is not in the meat. It is in the birds secretions, meaning manure and saliva. The one thing I am wondering. Would the virus not be in the birds blood and therefore in meat with blood?
