Can I tell you a little secret that I'm mortally ashamed of concerning how to deal with rude people? The reason why I'm not looking forward to going into work on Thursday? Alright, I will.

About two weeks ago, one of my supervisors (who is in charge of the Target Newsletter for our store) asked me (who usually edits the newsletter for her) to see if I couldn't come up with a short arcticle, concerning the upcoming holiday season, to fill the BACK page of the Target Times (I named it!). So, in the last ten minutes of my 8.5 hour shift, I wrote a "cute" little article about how, in the stressful holiday shopping season, a big smile and a friendly hello can change a guest's (what we call customers in Target) whole demeanor and attitude. I sort of went on in a way that sounded cute and inspiring, talking about how a smile can "turn a frown upside down" and how to make the Aberdeen Target the best retail store around. It kind of sounded like a pep-talk. However, it wasn't anything that I wanted my friends at work to know that I had written (everybody teases me about everything, so I didn't want to fan the flame) because I'd be mocked throughout the store (it really did sound kind of prissy, I guess). I left in UNSIGNED and assumed that if she used it at all it would be on the back page like she promised. WELL. . .I went in the other day to pick up my paycheck and there was a copy of the new Target Times. MY ARTICLE WAS ON THE FRONT PAGE WITH MY NAME IN BIG LETTERS!!! How embarassing! It was the kind of article that maybe a boss would have written to encourage his employees (who would have rolled their eyes at the article), not the kind that I wanted my co-workers to know that I wrote!!!

Anyway, hope that that story of how to deal with rude customers made you laugh. I still have to face my co-workers. . .particularly Alex, a boy who always makes fun of me for my religion and for being "sheltered." AHHH!
:sigh: and I can't even get a job. I'm not getting my youth allowance any more, so I've got to get a job somewhere, it's just no-one will hire you if you won't work Sundays.

To suffer for the Lord is gain. Keep to your convictions.

God bless

Well, since I'm a Sabbaterian, I will not and do not work on the Lord's Day. I was hired because a friend of mine (also a team member) asked them to hire me. Because she also was a good, Christian worker, they did. In my interview, I told them that I was a Christian and it went against my religion to work on Sundays (try that, if they don't want to be sued for religious discrimination, they have to! of course, I'd never sue. . .). For the first two months, I was scheduled to work every Sunday. Every week, I'd look at my schedule on Thursday and tell them that I couldn't work. Now, I've never had to work a Sunday (though there are those who complain about this) and I think that they'd die if I ever quit. :holy: Hint: if you can get hired, you can always change the schedule later. Most people would love the extra Sunday hours and might be willing to switch with you until you're not scheduled on the Lord's Day anymore.

How do all of you deal with meeting a bunch of people at once? That is my thing too. I can do fine with one on one though.

I dunno - I guess I just brace myself. The worst thing is that I am generally so nervous I remember absolutely none of their names. I'm hopeless with names as a general rule, so it's just so much worse when there's lots of them and I'm nervous.

I guess the other thing is not assuming they won't like me or something. I think I just assume I am going to like everyone, and do it that way. I must admit it is a little bit easier in a way when your dh is the new student or assistant minister - people actually want to meet you. It does leave you questioning motives at times, but I just pretend everyone is genuine - it's not that hard to believe either.

unfortunately, things work differently down here. we didn't have Sunday trading in major stores until 2 years ago (in my state). now they make the most of it, and choose only people who will work on Sunday. you first have to fill out an application form stating when you can work. I can only gather they take that look at it, see I can't work Sunday, and chuck it out. except at KFC, they give everyone an interview, then send a polite letter refusing your application.

Here it was about twenty years ago that they chucked out the blue laws in MD. Do you have any friends that have jobs who could put in a good word for you?

nope. it doesn't work that way. everything's done through centralised systems. i.e. Coles, K-Mart, Target, &c. are one big group (Coles-Myer). Woolworths, Big-W, Dick Smith Electronics, &c. are another big group (Woolworths Limited). for the major supermarket groups, you apply online. everything's processed through a central system, it doesn't matter how well you know anyone with these places, it's generally sorted out hundreds of kilometres away.
I guess with McDonalds and KFC if you had friends there it might help, but I don't, so... oh well. I'll just have to keep trying.

Have you thought about doing party plan stuff - like Tupperware - I kid you not. A male can make way more money than a female selling that stuff. There are heaps of differnt kinds of party things - book parties, make up (kidding) etc and you name your own hours. I used to do Tupperware (forgot to mention that - I did it to get better at meeting strangers), and it was a hoot. People buy it no matter how badly you do because they know it's a good product. You could start by selling to all your mum's friends or something - and then you just follow referrals. And I mean it when I say males sell more - dunno why, but women love buying Tupperware from a bloke. And it would really suit a students lifestyle.

i'll look at that if i still can't get a job. i'm going to town to apply for some more today, i think i've got a good chance of getting a job at leading-edge electronics, just depends if they've got a vacancy or not.

now that's a ripper of an idea!!!

you'd have to use different names of course.... good luck with it!

oh - you could always just try local hardwares and stuff. If you like being up in the middle of the night you could approach your local newsagency to deliver papers (we used to own won - hard to find people who want to do that). What about shelf stacking at woolworths or coles or something?

yup. applied for shelf-stacking, still have to work sundays. i don't have my license, so i can't do the papers. i'll try the local hardwares too, i think we have a couple of mitre 10's in town, i'll need to go through jobnet for those.
i used to do brochure and paper dropping when i was in sydney, we did over 2000 houses every week, as well as a 2000-house area once a month. it was good money, and we had me, my dad, 3 of my brothers and 2 of my sisters doing it, so it wasn't too hard. ah, the good ole days, getting up at five in the morning in -5 degree temperature, don't you just love it!
don't you just hate it when job ads say, experienced people, i mean, how are people meant to get experienced if people only ever want experienced people???

been there done that. Also did paper runs when we had the newsagency - I used to do the caravan park during the holidays. Best day of the year was new years day. Hated being up early, but loved that i got to go around blowing the whistle and waking the entire caravan park up! Very satisfying!

Have you applied for work at the uni. Or the local library - often they need casuals. Any job you can pick up that is government will pay really well too!

I'd almost rather not have any. . .it's almost like a thorn in my side to see so many unconverted young people who don't want anything to do with serious relgion (that includes me, unfortunately). I feel so insignificant around them
all. . .I shouldn't, I know, because I have the Holy Spirit within me, but I just do.

You actually defined the problem here! Its the others who have the problem as they are neither as interested or as knowledgable as you in the things of the Lord! No one with the Lord on their side is insignificant by any chance! Truly here I always look forward to your posts and they come across as confident in whatever you're speaking of.
God and one is a majority! Others likely feel much admiration for all that you know but they just dont have the degree of interest that you do! You're right that so many young people are strongly attracted to things of this world, and yes, that is sad!
Whatever we do, in word or deed is all to the glory of God! When He is honored we can have confidence in HIm! It just shows that when we encounter another person we never know what they feel.
When I was you age and started nurses school I was totally petrified to enter the room of a stranger and be there to give them care! I had to force myself to continue, to make conversation when I truly wanted to run! It was so frightening! Time and the repetition of tasks was such a helpful thing! As you said it is just no problem at Target so we'll pray that soon its no problem anywhere at all! God bless!
