Anybody here doing a double major in school? I am currently working on my degree in English Lit, but am considering also doubling up with Communications. I am not that far along so I figure it will be relatively easy to do. Anyone else doing it, or done it? And if so do you recommend it? How did you handle it if you did? Thanks:)

I am currently double majoring in Spanish and Elementary Education. My schedule has been entirely packed every year because of this, and I have had to constantly put my foot down and tell my advisor that I was going to do it even though she thought that it was WAY to much for me to do in 4 years, but I guess you could say that I've proved her wrong on that point because I"m graduating on schedule (in 4 years). At times I have felt overwhelmed because of the work load, but my college is a liberal arts college, so between that and el ed I would have had plenty of credits to graduate without taking any extra classes.
Since you know that you want to double major early on, I wouldn't think that you would have many problems fitting them all in. Make sure to sit down and figure out when you will be taking all of the classes that are necessary for the majors as well as graduation. The hardest part for me was fitting in all of the classes that are only offered in the Spring semester, or everyother year, and be sure to have a few different plans so if you don't get into one of the classes, you know what you should be taking and get into that other class.
The thing that has kept me sane through college is working ahead. I'm going to sound like a real geek for saying this, but seriously Fridays and Saturdays are the best days to study because there is generally hardly anyone around. Set goals for what you want done that day, and don't stop until you have reached that goal. One last thing, WORK AHEAD, and break the large projects into smaller chunks so that you aren't so overwhelmed the night before projects are due.
Double majoring is a good idea, and opens more doors to you than if you only had one major. So go for it now while you are still in college, all of your hard work and dedication will pay off greatly in the end!

I'm double majoring too, in Animal Science and Agricultural Education. Mine are slightly unrelated so It's going to take me an extra year at least. Some of the classes overlap or will replace others in one major but not too many of them. It's hard sometimes but they are two things that I really enjoy.

wow guys, thanks for all or your responses. I also will be working full time and I was wondering if anybody else has a busy workload and school load, or am I just being overly enthusiastic thinking I can work and do two majors at the same time?

You have to figure out if it will help you and if you want to. It is also helpful if the two are similar.

In college I double majored in Theology and Philosophy, which suited each other very well. I found that they helped me understand each better.

Now in my advanced studies, I am getting an MA in Theology and an MDiv. One is more geared toward pastoral work and the other toward academia and teaching. They compliment each other well and will provide very useful.
