• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

These are really great tips, Guys!! :) I am a smoker and I don't know how to quit. I have tried to quit by completely giving them up and maybe slow down. But t\it didn't work. I prayed and prayed to God, but I think my problem is deep down I don''t think God will help me and of course thats wrong. I know HE will. But when you come to that point of quitting your faith in God drops to zero sometimes. So from now on, I am going to keep praying and trying my best to quit! :) Thanks 4 all the tips everyone!! :)

The things I used to help me quit were,
The patch for 6 weeks, each step for 2 weeks ( they sell them this way and its cheaper)
Massive sunflower seeds LOL, I still each about 3OZ a day
Try your best not be to around smokers for a good 3 months, If you or anyone in your house does not smoke nobody should, your house should ALWAYS be a place you can go to get away from it.
Well thats what helped me and Im about 4 months free of it after 15 years of it killing me.
Good luck, I will pray right now for ya!
Walter

PS Im going to give ya a blessing, its my 1st one to give out!

Honestly no. I tried everything before I tried to quit. Pretzels, tooth picks, the patch, nothing worked. I layed it on God and I swear to you He took it all away. I had to finally heed the voice though.
I swear to this as well!!! It works,I ask for heavenly help, and its been right there.I dont know why I never asked before.I even beg.haha Yes,I beg.Oh and I bargain with God,If you keep me from mass cravings and keep me smoke free I'll do such and such.Gods laughing at me maybe but its our game.Good luck Waylon:thumbsup:

" have decided to thank and praise the Lord everytime I get a craving. Please pray for me"

What a lovely idea--GOOD TIP/THANKS.

Joyce Meyers has some good tapes on the subject if anyone is a fan.

PS. I'm down but not out, been smoking like a chimney-prayers welcome.

My tips are
1. As soon as you decide to quit get rid of any cigarettes you have left. You will want to smoke them.
2. Get rid of ashtrays in your house.
3. Clean your car and house try to get the smell out.
4. Change your routine, don't go where you always smoked.
5. Pay at the pump, if you go inside you will see them and ask for them.
6. Cold Turkey!!! The gradual thing does not work!!!

Nancy: I know you are right.

I know, I know, I Know....but I do it anyway....I can not seem to beat it, I'm ready to throw in the towel, besides I'm sucha mean person while withdrawing, I can't stand myself. Then I feel like a heel for giving in---it's a vicious circle.

I just kept telling myself, "I'm robbing God (tithes) as I would walk into a store to get cigs and just say things to myself like, "I'm a non smoker, I will quit smoking, I don't smoke anymore." That's kinda what I understand Joyce Meyers did so I "borrowed" it and it worked.

I also sorta made a bet with someone else who needed to stop drinking. We made a pact I guess would be a better way to word it. We just told one another, "I'll quit if you quit." Well they started drinking again (like a week later :( but I am happy to say and thanking the Lord for helping me be smoke free for 7 mos. now!!!

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!! DON'T GIVE UP!!!   Come now, just do it!

I've been smoke-free for a year after smoking for 18 years. The thing that made the biggest impression with me is the realization that:

You WILL get this same craving for a cigarette whether you quit or not. You just give in to the craving 20 times a day if you don't quit. When you quit, the cravings come much less often and they're easier to ignore.

I also made myself more active. When I have a craving, I busy myself and think of anything, anything but having a cigarette. Go for a walk, go to the gym, clean something, or - my favorite - brush my teeth. I was a menthol smoker and brushing my teeth or sucking on a cough drop helped me deal with cravings.

Please keep on encouraging those of us trying to quit.

I feel so bad that I have let this get a hold on my life. I pray to be able to break this bond. I feel I have let God down every time I light up. I have had short term sucessess, but like a previous poster mentioned I am taking it back from God after having turned it over and not trusting Him to give me the stregenth and it just bums me out--but I'm still working on it.

Thank you all for your posts---PLEASE more tricks, tips, kind words anything..
