  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Any pistol shooters?

I've been a fan of the 1911 since I was a kid. Being gadget-oriented with a love of modding, it's still a fun toy. Lot's of stuff to buy for it.

When I was carrying in the 80s, it was a Sig-Sauer P220 .45ACP (marketed by Browning at the time as the "Browning BDA"). It could fire anything--even full wadcutters--and do it more dirty than anyone should ever let a gun get.

Also, I was heavily handloading in the past, and .45ACP is an easy load to handload.

I've only accepted 9mm relatively recently, along with the proposition of not handloading in the future. 1911 is still loads of fun, but a S&W Shield is what I'd count on today.

My daughter prefers a medium frame revolver with +P, but does well with a snubbie with .38 Special. She doesn't like shooting a snubbie, but she can.

I remember the first time I took her too the range. She did excellently, but her response was: "Television lies!"

I would think so. I qualified for my concealed-carry permit using a Ruger 357 with a 3" barrel. After 50 rounds my hand wanted to do something else! :o

There's always that trade off that people must consider when choosing between revolvers and semi-autos.

You're essentially saying "do I want 6 rounds out of something that's a little less easy to conceal, but is almost certain to not have any malfunctions?" or "do I want 7-14 rounds (depending on gun) of something that's easy to conceal, but does run the risk of occasional jamming?"

I opted for the latter of the two in my case as my two standard carry guns are the Glock 27, and the Sig Sauer P338. I own some revolvers, however, they're more for fun as I've yet to find a holster that makes them comfortable to wear in a concealed fashion. Now, if this were the old west, I'd have no problem wearing my ruger on my hip ;)

I made that same choice also, even though I prefer revolvers somewhat. I usually carry a S&W 3913 (9mm), but my wife wants to switch to an automatic, so she may get it while I go with something else.

Well, that's true if you're in a long range situation.

In a case of a home invasion or something of the sort...I'd prefer to use a pistol.

I have a revolver (.357) and a sawed off 8-guage for home defense. My EDC is a 1911A.

How hard is it to find 8-gauge shells?

Are those buckshot or slugs?

This thing is an antique. Fortunately, I have some old shells that have been properly stored in a cool, dry place. (It used to belong to my grandfather). It is extremely difficult to find shells for it though. Ive also had to do some reloading.

Currently, I have #6, .00, and slugs.

8-guage...yikes! lol.

Hopefully you and everyone else in the house have time to put on ear protection before you have to shoot the invader...otherwise everyone's ears will be in some sad shape afterwards.

That's one major reason I like my .45 for home defense...if it did need to ever be fired indoors (and I hope it wouldn't), in terms of decibels, it's no worse than a 9mm or .380, but has much better stopping power (plus, it's a subsonic round) so it's kind of the best of both worlds.

Of course, firing anything indoors without ear protection is going to rattle the old ears...but, I'd rather have temporary hearing loss instead of permanent hearing damage.

That's what always cracks me up in the movies and on TV, they always show these indoor shootouts taking place, with nobody wearing ear protection, yet nobody seems to be bothered by the noise ^_^

Or in automobiles, even.

Even with hearing protection that thing is loud. Indoors... But, TBH, it is my "in case all else fails" weapon. Anything in front of it is gone.

Really? You just sort of point it and "Anything in front of it is gone?"

I had a target set up behind my house. 4'x4' Since it is sawed-off, the spread is much greater. I was about 30' from the target when I fired and it turned the wooden target to splinters. It bruised my shoulder and knocked me backward a bit. It felt like I fired a small canon.

I have competed in USPSA for many years and have really enjoyed the sport and the people. Always loved the 1911 so I shoot it in Limited 10 division, usually against the 2011 pistols.....always liked it when the scores come in and seeing the looks of the other shooters, like, he shot that with a 1911 :p

I retired being a competitor this year and am now just a participator. Just don't have the time to train any longer, not to mention age slowing reflexes and eyesight. :o
