Check out the workaround that EphesiaNZ gave. The chipset probably has no compatibility with any linux distro, so you'll need to find a workaround.

From what I gather, the WiMax driver is possibly not the issue in some cases but, the accompanying toolset for the driver which may be missing/not installed.

Ah, you will be better with Debian Sid and something like XFCE as it's free from the start and will be as up to date as Ubuntu.

What will be your position with Ubuntu once they adopt Mir as this may take them into non-free territory anyway?

Why specifically Debian sid, why not Debian stable? Also I use GNOME, isn't that just as free as XFCE? I don't particularly care for XFCE and I'm a big fan of GNOME 3 (I know there are those who don't like it at all).

Also, I haven't looked into Mir that much but according to Wikipedia it is licensed under GPLv3, so it's still free. It seems to be associated with Unity though, and I don't care for Unity much. I may consider a switch to debian when they adopt Mir, not sure though.

I specified Sid as the packages are fresher than stable and probably the same or close to the versions in Ubuntu. Yeah, use what DE you like, I just suggested XFCE as it's a great combo with Debian - yes, Debian has Gnome3 by default.

No sir, I no longer use Ubuntu. It was quite buggy. Do you know how to corrrect that issue in Mageia 3?

No sorry, I don't use Mageia, as I said the best bet is their forums and I've always found RPM based distros not as good as APT based ones when it comes to drivers that are not too common.

I know you said Ubuntu was buggy but have you ever tried Linux Mint?

Linux Mint go that extra mile to make the end users experience that much better than that of Ubuntu. This may or may not help but might be worth a try.

Yet another reason I don't like Canonical. >.<

Yeah, the Ubuntu of old has been replaced by the whims of shareholders I guess. I just hope distros like Mint migrate to a pure Debian base sometime in the future as Ubuntu's demise (if it happens) will take a lot of third party distros with it.

That might be for the best, too. It'll leave some users hanging, but there are quite simply too many distros out there.

Yes, while diversity in Linux/open source is it's #1 asset, it is also it's #1 enemy too. DistroWatch list approx 750 distros with about 400 as discontinued, that leaves about 350 active (300) and dormant (50). Of those, about 10% of that 350 are actually unique or useful - by unique I usually mean main distros like Debian that spawn other distros, unique are utility based or interesting such as Tiny Core, Parted Magic, FreeNAS etc...

Yup.
Linux could probably be reduced to these independent distros and be even more successful for it. People wouldn't get turned off it by having to pick and choose between a bazillion distros that may or may not be junk.
1) Slackware
2) Debian
3) Arch(IF they stop using systemd)
4) Knoppix/Parted Magic (useful utilities)
5) Fedora
6) Mageia
7) Tiny Core (for old systems)
8) Puppy (also for old systems)
9) Vector (easier version of Slackware, for n00bs :D )
10) FreeNAS
11) Gentoo

What else? I didn't include Mint because its versions are based on Ubuntu or Debian.

That's a fairly comprehensive list, covers the main distros. I would include a few off-the-shelf solutions such as pfSense and Smoothwall for firewalling and things like Zentyal and ClearOS for all-in-one small business solutions but, apart from that we are pretty much covered.
