CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've heard about Linux. o.o
I think our computer operators Windows operating system though and not Linux because of what type of computer it is. Its custom made.
THIS COMPUTER IS NOT A MAC EITHER.

Generally there are workarounds for incompatible hardware. I managed to find workarounds for my non-linux compatible printer and wireless adapter.
Definitely don't go installing linux unless you know what you are doing, though.

Generally though, you don't need to wory about using the command line to get incompatible hardware working when installing windows on old hardware.

I find Linux mostly better than Windows for hardware (both old and new) these days as all the hardware I attach just starts working without any driver CD or additional downloads. There will always be some old or new hardware that wont play the game but I've seen plenty of instances of this in Windows too

I'm a Mac guy through and through (have been since '89), that said I've been tossing around the idea of getting an inexpensive PC laptop and dumping Windows for a Linux distro. I'm an absolute novice when it comes to using Linux though, from what I've heard Ubuntu is the most user-friendly of them all, but I've also been interested in how TAILS works - although from what I understand, it's primarily a DVD/USB drive based system, correct?

Writing this from an Ubuntu laptop, no shakiness here! I am running GNOME 3 on it though, not unity. What problems were you having?

Ubuntu did not agree with my wifi chipset. It also kept prompting sudo pass and nothing worked. I was using 12.04 LTS from the wubi.

I've been running Ubuntu at home and work (server environment) and the only time I've had problems is when I messed something up
The only time the work one has gone down is when we had a power outage, and it came right back up without issue.

If your wifi chipset wasn't ubuntu-compatible, it is probably not linux-compatible at all. The same thing happened when I tried to install ubuntu on my old desktop; you just have to use ndiswrapper and the windows driver files and the problem is solved.
Also, "sudo" is required whenever administrator privileges are required, and many actions related to drivers require administrator privileges.
Wubi is being phased out because it can be unstable. The fact that you are able to install ubuntu via a piece of software within windows is a great feature as it is, though!

For example, I installed GNOME 3 over unity and now unity is broken! GNOME works fine though so there's no problem really
