Here where I live in Penna, a loaf of bread is over $3, anyone make bread to save a few bucks,,think it would be worth making your own??

Absolutely!!!

Making bread is one of the most satisfying things. I love making bread and there are so many different recipes. I now use dried yeast which makes it so simple as I only have to let the dough rise once.

I do hope you give bread making a try. Please let us know how you get on.

Blessings

I make nearly all of breads by hand. I don't find it takes that much effort, in fact I don't knead much at all. Most of the time in making bread is in the rising time. But I'm a stay at home mom so I have the time for that. About half the time I make semi-unleavened bread like focaccia or unleavened like tortillas and crackers. I buy really large bags of flour and I rarely use milk or eggs. So for me it is cheaper. And timed right, you can bake in the oven with other foods to save energy costs as well.

I like knowing what I'm putting into mine and my children's bodies. And homemade bread is so much better than the preservative laced plastic bagged stuff at the supermarket. And it tastes so much better!

If you use a bread machine, it is very simple to make wholesome, nutritious bread for you and your family for a lower cost than what you would pay in the store.
I have been through several bread machines over the past 16 years or so - the motors eventually die, and some are better than others.
I currently have an old used one that someone sold to me for $10 after my previous one died.

We make bread in the fall/winter months. I use my machine to make the dough sometimes, but always bake it in the oven. I don't know if it's cheaper, I think it is if you buy flour and yeast in bulk/big bags it might be cheaper.

I'd really like to try making some breads other than the traditional types and using some different flours, but I've not tried it yet because 1) I can only find the less common flours like rice & barley etc. in large bulk bags (I might not like the results and don't want to get stuck with all that expensive flour) and 2) I've never met anyone who does this with some tried and true recipes.

When I hear about things like bean flour, coconut flour and almond flour I think that sounds so interesting to try.
