Any Knitters?

How fantastic. So special to make something for the little ones! I am a handspinner so having fun spinning and knitting or weaving squares, but really need practice attaching them together. To be honest, my finishing work is less than desirable! Are you making pieces to be combined together, or knitting the whole thing at once? About my latest crochet quests : I got into filet - never did any before.
Reading through my mother`s old instruction materials [she was a pro], I figured out the basics of filet. But, as I always wind up doing, I started making my own designs.
I began with a simple border, then I thought of how neat filet would look on curtains. One drawback being, they take forever to finish. The second drawback : I hate counting.
So I decided to work from one side across to the other, repeating the design until I reach the desired width of the curtain, instead of working from top to bottom. Easier for me to count stitches and "squares" that way.
I made a curtain with a rose motif for a friend.
Next I made up a design with flying birds - the first bird curtain turned out great. Now I am close to finishing a second bird curtain with even thinner thread. Switched from 100% mercerized cotton size10 to size30.

Okay, I really got the hang of birds. Am again hankering for something different. Have a butterfly curtain spooking around in my head. My next designing project.

I am having fun!

It`s great that we have this creative power derived from the Creator of the universe himself. Although we cannot create out of nothing like he does, we can use the materials and the imagination he blesses us with.
And the best part : we can share his gifts to us!

You certainly sound like you're having fun with your creative power! I'm not so good with designing but I do enjoy making something out of a ball of yarn and a pair of knitting needles and I have managed to design a tiny tea cosy. I don't think I would have the patience to work with filet, but what you have done sounds beautiful.

A lot of people make afghans on circular or magic loop needles. The other popular way is to knit a lot of individual squares and sew them all together. That way they can accomplish a small thing quickly but each small thing goes towards something bigger. The thing I don't like about that is the sewing up - don't like that much at all lol.

Another small project you might like to try is a dish cloth - done very quickly and good for practising stitches.

Thank you, I didn't take a picture but I will when I unpack my winter stuff. I wish I would of thought of doing it in individual squares but I was doing one solid colour. Once I messed up I had to start over.. lol now I'm learning how to crochet. I'd like to make another scarf.

I love the dish cloth idea!

Hi, all!

I just joined CF this morning. I was perusing the site and read the original post. I love, love, love knitting, knitters...wearing my knitted creations!

I actually paid for a couple of knitting lessons last year, where I learned the basics of casting on, knit and purl...and I tell you I couldn't get the hang of it at first, b/c I wanted to hold my needles to knit differently from my instructor.

One day after a lot of frustration and fatigued fingers and wrist...I found a little group of ladies who met weekly at the local library to knit and converse...and they informed me that my way was quite acceptable...and it was called the continental or European way of knitting....they taught me a few tricks and I've been on a roll ever since.

...in fact, I can't stop knitting for very long. I find it helps me relax and stop worrying about things, when I do...it gives me patience when I need to wait, b/c I have something to do with my hands to keep me busy...and I love my finished projects. Many have a flaw or two b/c I haven't the confidence to unravel back to the mistake and start from there. I either unravel the entire project (mostly dishcloths and scarves for now) or I keep going to the end and hope those whom I gift them to will still appreciate or not notice.

At the moment, I'm working on a bulky scarf using (US) size 35 rocket needles and 4 strands of worsted wt. yarn. It's fun. I rolled my 4 strands of yarn into a huge ball before starting to avoid the strands twisting (had that experience already, and found this tip online). My ball of yarn is the size of a bowling ball and my needles are like needles fit for a giant...it feels weird and fun.

The pattern is called a one-hour scarf, but it took me an hour to knit 4 rows!

Can hardly wait to see the finished product! May take awhile, but I'll try to post a pic when I can.

Hi, all!

Little disappointed in my giant (US) size 35 needle scarf project.

It started off alright, but then my fingers started to cramp...and then the 4 strands of yarn began to look uneven...the huge bowling ball size of yarn was simply too awkward to tote around (I like to take my knitting with me when I'm out on some errand where I have to sit and wait).

I decided to put it away and instead to work on knitting one strand of yarn scarves. My plan was to knit scarves for everyone for Christmas. I have 2 1/2 months, right? Well, that is if the list doesn't get any longer. My only guy friend on my list wants his to be in his two favorite football team colors...and had the nerve to ask for a matching hat as well. Well I already know it definitely will not be a pattern using two strands together...he can forget it, if that's the case.

...but working a pattern by changing between 2 colors I haven't tried...so that should prove interesting...we'll see.

So glad you're not put off by the fact that you don't know many women your age who love to knit. So far I've stayed away from circular needles and enjoy doing tubular double-knit projects which are done on 2 straight needles. A few years ago my daughter gave me a sock knitting kit for Christmas but I haven't even got the skeins of yarn wound into balls yet. It does feel lovely, though.

Given, I take knitting and a book with me just about everywhere I go. My husband has a lot of dr/hospital appointments so we spend a lot of time in waiting rooms and I can't sit still for long.
