  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Any ideas?? Please help!!

I have always wanted to start a youth group type thing at my church, even growing up, just something that can get the youth and young adults together to have a safe hang out, do activities together and to pray together and help develope the faith better.

But I have no clue where to start with this. I am new to my church and dont know anyone there, so it is weird for me to start asking questions to people I dont know and who definantly dont know me.

I know the parish has REC, for the kids in the grade school and high school, but I remember REC, I taught REC for 1-4th graders, that is all it is, a boring class, the kids are not into it, they dont enjoy it, I actually think it pushes them away from the church instead of sparking their interest in it.

That is why I think a youth group type thing for high schoolers and for young adults would be a great idea, they could then participate in activities and hang out with others with the same beliefs and make safe decisions.

Any ideas on how to go about this?? Does anyone know of a Catholic youth groupish thing in their church?

Your first step should probably be to suggest the idea to the priest. As far as activities go, there are plenty of things that you could do - bowling, movie nights with discussion (works especially well if the movie has a good message in it), paintball, potluck suppers, Bible study, etc.

Hi Nic,

Both of my daughters are involved with our parish. My oldest is 19 and my youngest is 14. We have Confirmation class for the 14 year old...

That aside, my parish also offers to all adults Bible Study groups. A group of our faith study the Bible and then in class we talk about what we studied and we explain/express our thoughts.

We also have another program called "The awakenings". This program ask 6 questions to a group of people. In each group, there usually are about 5 to 7 people and these questions are to bring us closer and to have a deeper understanding of our faith.

I realize that you are new at your parish... but maybe what you might be able to do is talk to the secretary of the parish or ask your Father there or look over the Bulletin and see what phone numbers are being listed for various programs. If your parish is small, which most are... there may not be a lot of activities going on... and in a way that is good because there is a need to open up this door and with guidance, you may be the one to get the ball going.

I would talk to your Father and/or the Parish's secretary. Express what is on your heart and I think that you might be amazed on all of the opportunities that await you.

God's Peace,

Debbie

Here in Australia my friend does Antioch and Luke18. They do that kinda stuff, fun activities, prayers, songs, discussions, just hanging out, food, food, food.

Maybe you could dogpile or google Antioch and youth group and see what you can find, they might give you some ideas. Whitfords Antioch is a pretty active group near here

Good Luck!

That sounds awesome. I have been recently wanting to start a "youth group" for girls outside of church with horses. I have a friend in another state who started it and it has been a tremendous sucess for her and the girls! Now I just need to get off my lazy bum and start it!
