The best books I have read that deal with christian scripture, are the expositions by H A Ironside. They deal with scripture in a very clear manner, very easy to understand. If you find scripture boring, then his books are not for you, although i highly recommend them.

The Bible

non-fiction:

The Sacred Romance: Drawing Closer To The Heart Of God by Brent Curtis,John Eldredge

The Pursuit of God:The Human Thirst For The Divine by A.W.Tozer

The Knowlege of the Holy by A.W. Tozer

The Prayer That Changes Everything: The Hidden Power of Praising God by Stormie Omartian

Mere Discipleship: Radical Christianity in a Rebellious World by Lee C. Camp

Don't Just Stand There, Pray Something:The Incredible Power Of Intercessory Prayer by Ronald Dunn

Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home by Richard J. Foster

I Dared to Call Him Father: The Miraculous Story of a Muslim Woman's Encounter with God by Bilquis Sheikh

My Utmost for His Highest :Updated Edition(daily devotional) by Oswald Chambers

Port Of Two Brothers by Paul Schlener (the story of two brothers and their families lives 40 years 50's-90's of missionary work in the Amazon,it is at times a 'harrowing' read)!

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom

God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew

fiction:
This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Frank E. Peretti (and others by him)

(Love the way they both make you think about spiritual warfare taking place all aound us,and the power and importance of Christians praying for their communities)

The Kingdom and the Crown, series (Vol. 1: Fishers of Men) by Gerald N. Lund, there are 3 books in this series.

Plus the 12-book series of Left Behind by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LeHaye, although I believe in post-Trib-Pre-Wrath Rapture, not Pre-Trib as in these books. (sorry to say the films by Cloud Ten Pictures are really bad IMHO).

I also want to read-- And The Shofar Blew by Francine Rivers.

I second that:clap: I'm reading Mere Christianity at the moment, and it's a very good book, not boring either

Can I third that? :) Anything by CS Lewis is worth your time. I'd also recommend The Screwtape Letters (also by Lewis).

Another book to consider is The Barbarian Way by Erwin McManus. It's the book that made all the dots connect for me.

Or if you're looking for something a bit more academic I'd consider either Jesus Among Other Gods, by Ravi Zacharias, or Letters From a Skeptic by Greg Boyd. Both are fantastic reads.

I'd like to add my voice to the recommendations of C.S. Lewis and Frank Peretti.

I would recommend Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress as well. You might want to make sure you get the updated version as the original is in the KJV-style English.

I like The Holiness of God by RC Sproul as well.

Happy reading :)

If you are prone to thinking about subtle spirtiual warfare then consider "Weight of Glory" by Lewis. In my opinion it has some of his best work, and at teh point where I was shopping for works by Lewis it somehow was not in any collection of his works (which were always better buys). The title piece makes clear some of the subtle ways Christian thought has been preverted. I think 'The Inner Circle' is part of this collection, a thought provoking work on the attraction to belong to the elite, and the differences between the rewards of true interest and this false desire.

I like Screwtape very much, but hesitate to make a blind recomendation. It seems people either love or hate it. It is a collection of letters from Screwtape a senior Devil to his nephew on his first field assignment. This means everything is told from that side. Some folks have trouble with such things. One big caution here. DO NOT get the translation into American. Sorry I'm not at my library and so much is misfiled I might not find it anyway, so no publisher name. The easy key is if there are no German soldiers it is the American translation. Other things are Liberal and Conservative replace High and Low for Church divisions (This the most significant, Lewis despised 'liberal' Christianity). Also Liver and Onions replace tripe. But the lack of German soldiers is a HUGE problem for those most likely to have problems with the side it is told from. Somehow it still comes through the soldiers in question are German soldiers from WW II. The American translation calls them 'enemy soldiers' yet elsewhere the Enemy means God. If the view would confuse you this translation will confuse you even more.

Oh and a little bit about the character of Lewis. The third book in his Space Trillogy, 'That Hideous Strength' has some very nasty folks. You might think they are patterend ofter the Nazis. They are not, they are patterned ofter the 'Black and Tans'. Lewis was asked about his rather unmerciful treatment of them and he replied something like 'It is those on our side who it is most difficult to forgive'. Rather unlike many Christians today who will forgive or excuse anythign a Christian does and nothing a non-Christian does.

Yes, the question is too general.

Some basic books on faith that you may want to read:-
Loren Cunningham - Living On the Edge on Faith and Finances, Is That Really You God?, Making Jesus Lord

John Bevere - Under Cover (Spiritual Authority), Drawing Near, A Life of Intimacy with God, Fear of the Lord, Driven by Eternity, Honour's Reward

Derek Prince (Bible Scholar) - The Holy Spirit in You, Protection from Deception, Fasting, Blessings or Curses - You Can Choose, God is a matchmaker, Shaping History through prayer and fasting

And many many other good books!
