  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Any "Flat Earthers" here?!

The only flat earth I can think of is those that think that science is either objective or fundamental.

Or that abiogenesis is more than a gaping hole in an a priori paradigm: "that life is a biochemical accident" Some flat earthers think it a hypothesis, even more deluded are those who call it a theory!

There are a few around here.
They crawl out from under their respective rocks when the time for pure insanity is at hand.

Now it's the chemists that have truly deceived us. All that talk about atoms, electrons, and whatnot.
We all KNOW that the world is made of earth, air, fire, and water.

Ah!

But do you know what an electron "is", indeed what they think it "is" .
In fact does it exist at all till I see It, and is the one I see, as real or unreal in your world too? Does it exist in your universe only, or does it exist simultaneously in an infinite number of universes ? Indeed do you exist? And do you exist in an infinite number of universes with every possible history and future?

Or as Einstein put it " I refuse to accept the moon does not exist till I look at it". He was forced to concede it was true.

And a leading U.K. Quantum physicist has rightly said it is an embarrassment to physics ( that most of them cannot even agree which version of absurdity they believe in!)

So please, those who base faith on science :
Don't tell us we believe in absurdity, yours is so much worse!

So just to focus on your one potentially relevant comment in this thread, does this mean you are in fact a flat earther?

I regard "flat earth" in its colloquial context as the belief in absurdity.

I observe that those who regard science as more than a tool, indeed make it a philosophy of existence, believe in absurdity the equivalent deserving of honorary membership of flat earth society.

Sadly most don't know enough to realise it!

For those who don't realize it, what do you think they should do to gain understanding?

Give a rational answer to the paradox underlying the Copenhagen interpretation that does not involve absurdity: that "it does not exist till observed"

The normal way the absurdity is resolved is by a worse absurdity.. the multiverse of all futures and pasts,

It is the ultimate black crow paradox.
Starting from a premise of objective reality and causal universe, the Copenhagen interpretation concludes it is neither. Starting from " all crows are black" science concludes " all crows are white"

Nonsense Deserving of honorary membership of the flat earth society.

If you are " saved by science" poor you!

Ah, got it. Thanks.
By the way, you won't succeed.
The professional quantum physics community think it embarrassing too!

E.g..

The Most Embarrassing Graph in Modern Physics

PS - I am a postgrad scientist who has been involved both in science of the small semiconductor quantum physics, and science of the large cosmology/ astrophysics, I know something about it!

So then you know we should keep working on understanding it then?

I like J. B. S. Haldane's sentiment: "Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose."

That graph is not an embarrassment, but it may herald the end of Logical Realism. Good riddance, IMO.

But I already do understand it. They look for the answer in the wrong place.

They look in science , not philosophy.
In philosophy science is clearly just a way to model and a model of observation.

The paradoxes only exist if you pretend science describes " what is" not a description of what it " normally does"

As a model the equations work within the tolerances we need for prediction. Mostly. The oddities are pushing the model outside its working envelope, in hoping a model of what it does can also say what it is!

Believing science as a philosophy of life, is like putting faith in a lego building!
