The only fighting game series that I've had more than a passing glance at are the Soul Edge/ Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive games. Why? Because they've the only series that I've played where it actually feels like a fighting simulation, rather than a button mashing contest (especially Soul Calibur).

Actually, now that I think about it, Bushido Blade was quite good in that regard too. With two experienced players nearly every blow is either parried or dodged, since not doing that means death. Very interesting and refreshing experience, especially since it predated Soul Calibur (possibly Soul Edge too, can't remember).

When I played Bushido Blade 2 with my friend, it was really hilarious, especially one stage where you could fall off. We killed ourselves more often than we killed each other I think. ^_^

Oh, if you don't like button mashes, check out Virtua Fighter. I heard that's really anti-button mashing.

I dunno where the whole button mashing thing comes in, must be a lack of good competition... where I play, button mashing is like a deadly sin, haha.

I've always wanted to get good at a 3D fighter, but I must be content with 2D games... which are more fun anyhow. I like the pacing more.

2003 has an interesting system, but SNKP needed to playtest this a bit better. If SNKP keeps this format and just does some tweaking to characters (and actually beta tests for more than like 2 weeks) then the next KoF could be really good.
As it stands... some characters needed playtesting. Duo Lon is very, very good. Not unbeatable, but you can tell SNKP didn't let people mess around with the game long enough before the release.

I am more of a stratagy/action gamer, so any fighting game I have isn't tradition Hit button (X) Hit button (Y) for double-smash, whatever. For instance, I love Super Smash bros. Melee but dislike playing as Marth (sorry marth) because of his combos. I am better at dr. mario anyway :).

SSB:M seems to get no respect as a fighting game, everyone trashes it as a party game, while is has astonishing depth to it.
