Heh. I've always leaned more toward the Tortoise/pretentious instrumental side of indy stuff, but every once in a while when I catch an emo show on a college station, there's nothing finer than driving around and blowing the speakers out.

I've recently decided that I need to supplement my current music with something emo-y - 2 or 3 recommendations?

y'know, I've never been into Slint too much for some reason. The little I've heard by Mogwai I've liked. I've been getting really into mellower/ish stuff lately: 6 Parts 7; Unwed Sailor; Tara Jane O'Neil; and Pele (who, oddly enough, had someone from Promise Ring on their first album - it's odd cuz they don't sound even remotely similarly to PR).

I've been hearing about Papa M quite a bit lately (so much so that I almost went to see them on Friday, but studying beckoned...) - I'll be sure to check em out as soon as I get out of this John Denver phase. Yeah, he's better than you'd expect.

Could you possibly recommend a song or two by those bands?
Where you asking me for a recommendation or from tionFyre?

If it was me then I would recommend:

Slint - Good Morning Captain (from Spiderland)

Mogwai

From Happy Songs for Happy People:
'Killing All Flies' and 'Hunted By a Freak'

From Young Team:
'Tracey' and 'Mogwai fear Satan'

From EP+6:
Burn Girl-Prom Queen and Superheroes of BMX

From Rock Action:
'Sine Wave' and '2 Rights make 1 Wrong'

There are also free MP3s downloadable from http://www.mogwai.co.uk/audio.html. Sad DC and Miracle are the best in my opinion.

Papa M
From Whatever Mortal:
'Over Jordan' and 'Krusty'

I would also recommend practically anything by Smog (aka Bill Calahan), he is a dude.

cheers,

Andy T

A great web site for perusing good bands is epitonic.com - they've got oodles of bands (I'd be surprised if ya couldn't find more than 3/4 of the bands mentioned on this thread) with mp3s and shorter samples (for the 56Kers, whose ranks I just sucktastically joined).

I shall vouch for epitonic.com, it's a grand site. Papa M by the way, is Dave Pajo (ex Slint) and I saw himself and Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai) play in glasgow a few years ago, ah...twas masterful! I highly recommend Cat Power, Smog and Mogwai. Papa M was playing with Mogwai in America this year I think.

As an aside, you were born fours days after me. Spooky!

cheers,
