There is no external imperative for God. In that case, what does "should" mean?
Why should God love me? The force of "should" is not on God, but is on me. You may read it as: why should I be loved by God? There MUST BE a reason for God to love me. God is love is not a good enough reason.

I'll bite. I don't consider Christianity (or Islam, or Judaism, or Buddhism, etc.) a cult because it doesn't fit the definition of one. Here's the definition from Merriam-Webster:

: a situation in which people admire and care about something or someone very much or too much
: a small group of very devoted supporters or fans

By that definition both fundamental Christianity and Islam would be considered cults. I don't know enough about either Judaism or Buddhism to judge those two. It looks like juvenissum was correct in admitting that he was in effect a member of a cult.

Absolutely not. This question was with me for decades and I could not give myself a satisfactory answer until a few years ago. If you can't answer, that is fine. But it is a very common and good question.

I'd start by trying to find out what question they are really trying to ask? Or I'd reframe the conversation completely, since most such questions are premised on misunderstanding anyway - directly answering the wrong question isn't helpful.

To which an answer is "because his love is unconditional". But 'twould be much better to reframe the whole thing by sidestepping the question and telling a story.
