• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mods, edit if you need to, but i would like to have a response for this)

Hey, Ive been depressed for 14 months, and it keeps getting worse. I have gotten into SI and suicidal thoughts more and more frequently. It scares me and i dont trust myself. I was thinking of getting an AD to help me, but dont know which would be good. Are there any you would recommend? I am only 17.

I am really nervous about going to the psychiatrist though because i am not 18 and my mom has to come too. I dont want her to know about the things I have done or have been thinking. Is there someone who can walk me through a psych visit, and tell me if it is possible to not have my mom in the room when i tell the doc about SI and suicidal thoughts? thanks.

I've had terrible depression for years, with SI and a serious attempt.
You need to talk to someone you can trust.
Your folks should know about what you're going through. It might help them to understand what will and won't help you. Many folks are just plain ignorant about depression - the ignorant folks are usually the ones who will tell you to "just get over it."
Antidepressant meds work differently for different people. I have found two that have worked very well for me: Paxil and Wellbutrin SR. These meds can save your life - they saved mine, literally. But you'll need a doc to help you deal with them at first and figure out a dosage that will help you.
I also tried some that didn't help me at all.

Feel free to PM me if you need.

Matthew

Eh... I know how you feel as far as everything goes. Though, medication has never worked for me. Councelling is really the best thing, i think. I get councelling and it really makes me feel better.. you just have to make sure that the person that is counselling you can relate to the issue and really cares.. I have had plenty of people that would counsel me and had no idea what i was going through and really didn't care enough. If it wasnt for God giving me the hope that i needed to, I am not sure that i would be alive right now. As far as you feel with your mom and all... I feel the same way towards mine. all of my counselling and and everything is secretly done online. She knows nothing about it and I'm pretty glad that she doesnt... remembering the last time she was informed.. it wasnt as wonderful as i would have hoped...

To add to what Domi_Adsum_05 has said, most, if not all psychiatrists maintain doctor-patient confidentiality. This means that the doctor will not speak to anyone about anything you've said during a session with him. (You choose whether or not your mother is present during the session). The only people who will know will be those you choose to let know, unless the doctor suspects or is aware that you are a threat to yourself or to others. i.e. sucidal, homicidal, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of what the conditions are for self-injury, but I would assume that your mother will be made aware, if she isn't already.

Each psychiatrist is a little different so it's difficult to walk you through a session, as it basically depends upon what you have to say, however, I would like to wish you luck
.

As to my opinion on anti-depressants, it's true what DarkLegend28 says, medication does not work for everyone, but it does work for some. Always keep in mind that
anti-depressants are 'trial and error' medications, which means that it may take some time to find a medication that works for you, if there's one that does.

I have never heard of a minor having to have a parent in the session unless it was scheduled as a joint session -- there shouldn't be a privacy issue.

In my experience, the sessions go like this: you walk in, it's a small room. They ask you a couple brief (sometimes leading) questions, and then just let you get things out for the rest of the time. It's actually quite nice to be able to talk to someone who you know will keep things private.
