...JESUS makes it clear that it is not eternal torment, but eternal death:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24
What is it that is defined as being everlasting? The Punishment of Destruction. When something is destroyed, it is broken down, consumed, devoured, annihilated, eaten up, cut off, ruined, death. The wicked will be cut off, burnt up, consumed into smoke and ashes, destroyed, perished, dead and gone forever when 'that day' comes.
Eternal Damnation:
But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Mark 3:29
...and this ["damnation" Greek: krisis κρίσις] means an eternal condemnation, judgment or punishment also separation [Strong's Concordance].
The damnation is the Final Judgment of eternal death to the wicked who will be consumed unto ashes by the fire from GOD as scripture attests to, they are forever 'cut off' and separated from the living-those written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
Eternal Judgment:
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Hebrews 6:2
... This is actually the same as above, for the wages of sin is Death. Jesus died upon the cross for our sins. He did not burn forever and ever. Jesus does not want us to die [2nd Death].
Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ezekiel 18:31
Say unto them, [As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ezekiel 33:11
Everlasting Fire:
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast [them] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. Matthew 18:8
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Matthew 25:41
...the term everlasting in the Greek is aiōnios αἰώνιος [eon] which means without beginning and end [Strong's Concordance] and describes duration, either undefined but not endless, or undefined because endless. [Vines Expository]. The finality of the judgment will be truly forever. There is no resurrection for those in the Second Death and no more a chance at life by the Grace of God.
...An example of something [chains under darkness] that is said to be everlasting but having an obvious limit is found in Jude:
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Jude 1:6
...The fire will last for an unknown amount of time, as each individual will be punished according as their works shall be, yet even the Devil will be ashes:
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20:10
[In the English, the passage is often used to make a case for "eternal torments in the fire", but in the Greek it is much easier to understand, for it is stating that the Devil shall burn consecutively (day/night), without ceasing [continually], until he is gone -"forever and ever" being the words "αιωναςG165 N-APM τωνG3588 T-GPM αιωνωνG165 N-GPM" (Esword app.) or "aiwnas twn aiwnwn" (w - omega). This phrase actually means "time unto time or age unto age or period unto period" which actually translates into a more structured english of "throughout". So, the context reveals that there is no definitive timeframe that is given, but rather a mere general instance of unknown exact duration, but only that it continues to be in that state [of torment] until over, and as the Bible attests to, the Devil will be brought to ashes and to naught.]
There are many passages which directly use the words "forever" in the context of eternal life and of God, and these do mean "forever, eternal, without end, etc." but the context always dictates which use is meant. Those who will receive eternal life shall live forever, being in Christ Jesus who is Life, but those who perish in the flames of the Second Death, are eternally gone.
Hellfire will burn upon the whole face of the earth, but the fire itself will not last forever, only the results of the Judgment, for God makes an utter end and then creates a New Heaven and a New Earth where there is no more pain or suffering, for they will have passed away and are gone for all time:
That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes. Isaiah 65:16
For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. Isaiah 65:17
And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. Isaiah 65:19
What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time. Nahum 1:9
For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. Revelation 7:17
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4
