Imagine actually believing that we were cruising around in dune buggies and playing golf on the moon in the 60's

Silly isn't it ? Next they'll be telling us they've found water & they are about to open an Olympic pool just for the astronauts :swimmer:

How are they going to acheive landing on a wondering star ?

Orbital mechanics. The easiest way is to use a low consumption trajectory available during certain periods when Mars and the Earth are at a particular distance relative to each other in their orbits. It is also possible to further reduce fuel on both ends using a gravity assist, where you use the acceleration from nearly orbiting a planet or moon (Mars has two small moons) for additional Δv

Just lol

Yes, almost as crazy as the thought that in the early 90s the general public gained access to a self-healing packet switched communications network capable of supporting geometric increases in bandwidth, year over year, allowing people to make video calls and stream movies, and being automatically self-healing in the event part of the network such as a routing and switching center goes down unexpectedly due to an equipment fire or fiber optic cables being cut without even an interruption in user traffic, since such a system would have to break up messages into packets and reassemble them.

Or that we would have reliable wireless communications anywhere on the planet except underground or in certain buildings, and that this wireless communication has been integrated into the global network

Or that we could manufacture transistors less than five nanometers in size by using extreme ultra violet light generated by vaporizing droplets of tin using high-powered lasers.

Crazy ideas people have…

I’ll be back, because one of the line printers of my electromechanical mainframe is out of paper, and the keypunch I am using to produce the punch cards for this conversation keeps jamming.

They'll need some cows that eat moon dust, then they'll have both beef and cheese. But where to get the gherkins....I "wonder"....

Lunar greenhouses could potentially allow us to grow massive cucumbers, several times larger than on Earth, due to the low gravity.

All that is needed is fertiliser and water.
I've got an idea. Send up a couple of flat earthers. They will be in constant denial, so you've immediately got one of the largest rivers in Africa on tap, and, well, because they are full of it...

Hopefully it will be uneconomic to transport the cucumbers back to earth. If successful, perhaps all cucumber production could be moved to the moon and thus make the earth a cucumber free zone. This would greatly improve all salads.

That’s an obvious cheap fake - the geometry of the lander appears wrong. I’ve reported it to YouTube for removal. Hopefully they delete the entire channel.

Also space elevators are not a new concept in space exploration - Arthur C Clarke proposed the concept many decades ago, and it would work for connecting the Earth to any body in geostationary orbit. As far as building one to the moon is concerned, I haven’t seen that proposed before. But if we can build any space elevator, which we can, in principle, it is simply an engineering task of finding a material light enough and strong enough to support the weight of the structure, that would be quite nice, since it would dramatically reduce the energy requirements for achieving orbit. The orbital station component is moving at an orbital velocity, whereas the ground station isn’t, so one interesting effect is that as an elevator car ascended such a structure it would be accelerated. Thus it would be desirable to have one vehicle descend while the other ascends, like a funicular, to counteract these forces.

I once had a vivid dream about this where by I traveled up to the moon in one

If you believe this then You'll believe anything.

There are groups in the US that have been “working” on the space elevator concept for decades. I even did some contracting for one which developed some interesting robotics concepts but failed when it came to their attempt to manufacture carbon nanotubes (a fiendishly difficult to produce material suggested as ideal for a space elevator “ribbon”, basically a flat cable that the vehicles would ascend, since it would weigh very little and have extreme tensile strength, but alas its thus far impossible to manufacture in quantity).

So its the sort of thing people are “working on” and such work might produce good technologies, but I would be surprised to see a space elevator in my lifetime, and I’m also not convinced that its the right technological solution.

I am much more interested in what we have now, namely, the increasingly reliable and inexpensive SpaceX rockets. And rockets are cooler anyway; taking an elevator to space takes all the fun out, since half the fun of getting there is flying in a rocket, experiencing the G forces, etc. Also if the ribbon snapped (most likely due to intentional damage) and part of it fell to Earth, that could be unpleasant - it would be a requirement to locate the system in the middle of an unpopulated region.
