In Evolution class today I asked the professor about how long it would take for a fruit fly lineage (3 week generation length) to speciate; that is, to give rise to a new species.

Evolution class? Would it be too much to ask the name of the course and the school?

She said about 500 million years. (She knows fruit flies, by the way.)

So some of her best friends are fruit flies? In any case fruit flies have speciated in the laboratory in about 200 generations. In short, a strain of fly subjected to reduced temperature, was after some two hundred generations unable to produce fertile offspring with the control group of the original species. If you're really interested you can find the citation on line, just do a search.

Can anyone here do the math besides me? What does this mean for organisms like humans with 10-30 year generation lengths? Now don't make me lead you by the hand.

Oh, maybe I need to: 20 years is (20 * 52 / 3) times as long as 3 weeks. Apply that factor to the 500 million year figure: 500,000,000 x 20 x 17 = 170 Billion years. And that is even assuming humans have as many offspring as fruit flies!!!!! Something here is mathmatically impossible. Savvy?

I suspect that it is not the mathematics that is impossible. Were I the least bit cynical I might believe your account was a little inaccurate.

I did not realize that at 33!!! Gee, for a 33 year old woman "that time of life" could mean MANY different things!!

What is your excuse...you are in your 40's-by your own logic it seems like you should know more than you do?????!!!!!
