Luke expounds on this principle a little more starting in chapter 11:

5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[e] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[f] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

The last sentence is basically saying that even though we, as humans, are flawed, if we give to others, we will be given for whatever we ask the holy spirit.. right?

My .02: if I read correctly, you are essentially asking about prayer.

2 Cor 1:20 For all the promises of God in him [are] yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us."

I understand this to mean the "yea" is what is His will already. And the amen is us using our dominion (which He gave us, relinquishing it during our lifetime) to say "ok" to what He wants to do, thereby releasing His Power into action. Usually this will require us to do more than just pray.

Try praying like that and I think you will find what you are looking for :) (Including what He is not looking for being "burned up")

Sorry, but can you re-word that more simply? LOL :)

I agree Asvin, it is very hard to understand.

I think the main theme of the Sermon on the Mount is the Kingdom of Heaven. Not Heaven the place, but Heaven the state of mind. The narrow way that few in this life find. So elusive is this state of being, that it requires dogged persistence and total commitment for anyone interested in seeking after it. But once found, is like the pearl of great price.

The Kingdom of Heaven as taught by Jesus, I believe is a state of being passionately in-love with God and others. So much so that one's own self counts for nothing. In fact, it is seeing self in others. Loving others as if they were you. Of apprehending the self not as an island, but interconnected to everything.

But although I largely see such verses as mystical in nature, I'm sure there is also a practical utility to their meaning as well. For example, Christ's disciples were sent out to perform actual miracles.

No, The Holy Spirit is the Gift we can get if we simply ask. With this gift comes many different things. Understanding, Wisdom, an Awareness of God, Spiritual discernment, Comfort, contentment, Inner peace, Internal Joy, a greater capacity to love, and on and on. For example with the Gift of the Holy Spirit there will be very few "confusing verses." Because He who inspired the word now lives in your Heart.

Ask, Seek and Knocking, as little to do with making wishes for stuff or even wishing for a Noble thing like a cure for everyone with cancer. What He is willing to give you is far more valuable. That is an understand and working relationship with God.

We Ask in Church and places like this. we Seek in Prayer and in scripture. we knock by repeating this process till we get what our hearts are looking for.
