I understand that the 7th day is the sabbath but how do we know what day was day 1 in creation? Did God start the first day on Tuesday or Sunday? Hope this makes sense.

The fact that it's Thur24th Feb 3:00pm here and Friday 25Feb 10:10 am in New Zealand means that time is dependant on where you are in the world.
In the beginning there were no calenders so how do we know when God created day 1?

God did not name the days, he numbered them. Rome changed this to names using pagan dieties to name each day
Sunday (dias de solas -- day of the Sun) worship day for worshipping the Sun God
Monday - Moon Day -- day for worshipping the Moon
Tuesday - (someone fill this in for me)
Wednesday - Wodens Day (Nordic God)
Thursday - Thors Day (another Nordic God)
Friday - Freas (sp) Day (yet another Nordic God)
Saturday - Saturns Day (also known as Zues)
And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws:
I notice you haven't commented here...Hmmm

In over one hundred languages their name for the seventh day is "sabbath." Do a web search for Dr. William Mead Jones; for example: Weekly Cycle. In the beginning there were no calenders so how do we know when God created day 1?
Tuesday = The English name is derived from Old English Tiwesdæg and Middle English Tewesday. This was a loan translation of Latin dies Martis, originally associating the day with the planet Mars. The Germanic name translates Mars, the god of war, as Teiwaz (Old English Tiw). (From Tuesday - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
