  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Best anime is like saying best movie... doesn't exist
I'd recommend Rurouni Kenshin (up to the end of Kyoto), Full Metal Panic, Evangelion (episodes 25&26 do NOT exist regardless of what everyone says), Cowboy Bebop for more mature tastes. Just a warning, DO NOT check in your brain if you want to watch Evangelion. You're gonna get swamped with incessant psycho-babble and weird crazy conspiracy theories and *cough* other stuff *cough*.

I'd recommend:

Rurouni Kenshin
Ayashi no Ceres (a.k.a. Ceres, Celestial Legend)
Evangelion (I agree with Piemann, ignore eps 25 and 26, the movies are better, but the end STILL doesn't make much, if any, sense)
Hellsing (no relation Van Helsing)
Gundam Wing
Gundam X
Love Hina (the manga, not the anime. pretty funny and good story if you can get past all the fanservice)
Trigun
Naruto
Flame of Recca (the manga, not the anime. the anime stops at about 1/3 of the manga)
Fruits Basket (good non-yaoi shoujo)

If you just want single-shot movies, I recommend:

Ghost in the Shell
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (my favorite Miyazaki film)
Akira
Ninja Scroll

Well, if you think about it, the last two episodes of Eva are on the same DVD with episode 24, so it's kinda hard to avoid them...I think those two episodes and the movies are good in their own respects. Besides, the movies were Anno's way of getting back at the drooling fanboys and the ones who made the Eva hentai ;) .

IMO (and steering clear of the Eva debate), I think that Please Teacher!, Ranma ½, and Chobits are excellent choices. All three have their fair share of fanservice (a lot, in the case of Ranma, anyway), but it's generally tame. I do emphasize Please Teacher!, not it's sequel, Please Twins. Teacher is very mature (as in not childish) and well-done. Twins was just a fanservice-fest, hands down; there's hardly any substance in it, despite it's 'good' intentions (it didn't stop me from enjoying the truly good parts of the show, but it got old, real quick).

Since they're the last two episodeds, they're easy to avoid. Just stop after episode 24. ;)

Really? I didn't know that. How is it "getting back at them?" (I'm seriously curious about this. I'm not being sarcastic or patronizing).

Yeah. It could have been a two episode OVA (or even one) instead of 12. Although, like you said, there were some good parts.

Chobits is one of my favorite CLAMP manga (actually, its the only one I've actually read/seen, but still). However, it IS for more mature readers.

Well, it wasn't getting back at every fan, because quite a few did like episodes 25 and 26. The main point of 'spitting back at the fans' so to speak, was the hospital scene at the beginning of End of Eva. It was done not only to 1)shock people, but to 2)satirize the certain amount of people who'd made the female characters of the series into pinups and those that had produced the illegal hentai of Eva. That's the main reason I just don't even consider that scene to really be in the series. It was meant as a slap in the face (even though it still cycles back into the twisted psychology in the series and movies).

The rest of the movie is really more like just trying to make something as incoherent and whacked as possible to annoy the fans that didn't like the last 2 episodes. The problem is, that plan backfired, and while some people don't like EoE because of how confusing it is, there were some that loved it. On a certain level, they were being serious about it, but did it in a way that just escalated the hype of the series by burying it so deeply behind the imagery and psychology that it gave people even more to ponder over. It was a double-edged sword and probably one of the most effective publicity stunts in anime, if not Japanese cinema as a whole. When I watched the movies for the first time, I was under the impression that the fan dissatisfaction prompted Anno and Gainax to go back and produce the original script that they'd had in mind for 25 and 26, since apparently the original ending had been 'thrown together due to lack of funds'. After I saw other pieces of information, I seriously thought about it and realized that the original ending was the way they planned it-even though the series itself was action packed, that really wasn't the focus of it. The last two eps dealt with the real heart of the series-the conflicts between all the things in Shinji's head. The problem was that it was just infinitely confusing and didn't have enough action for fans' tastes. I've always really liked the 'what if?' scenario in episode 26; I'd have liked to have seen what a spin-off show based on that would have been like.
