I have read some of those "50 Shades" responses and they are overwhelmingly condemning. It was like they were completely caught off guard by Christian women being interested in that stuff. (erotic literature or film) It was known in the secular world that "romance novels" sold well for a while. (until they became too formulaic)

They have an unrealistic notion about women as sexless entities that I’ve never encountered. I knew we were heading for a problem when Mark Driscoll’s Real Marriage created an uproar. They were having conniptions about oral and anal sex. I checked my calendar to make certain I hadn’t awakened in another era.

The idea of married Christian women wanting to become aroused by someone OTHER than their husband; (and make no mistake, Ms James stated she wanted women to be driven mad with arousal from her books) or even worse, single Christian women getting worked up with no spouse to relieve that, was beyond incomprehensible for them.

They had a regimented ideology about physical intimacy I don’t embrace. Its very repressive and constricts your natural expression and response. It divorces the mind and heart and you operate from your head instead.

It shattered their paper mache' world view that had men as the porn consuming lust filled perverts that needed the non sexual women in their lives to keep them on the straight and narrow.

James forced them to face what women were doing. And even then, they blamed her until the data proved otherwise. They wanted a scapegoat.

They had a very long history on their side.

In 400 bc, Hippocrates (father of western medicine) stated flat out that human females had no sexual desires and could feel no sexual stimulation. PERIOD. They were just passive recipients of the reproductive process. This became gospel to all western society despite numerous encounters with other cultures that believed differently. It was not until about the year 1900 that western medicine FINALLY realized it was incorrect. Even a century later, there are still hold outs (mostly in fundamental Christian circles and extreme rural groups) that believe that way. But even though much of Christendom has realized the facts, they have not had the centuries to develop theologies and responses to this new reality.

The story of Onan really does NOT work to condemn female self-relief.
No seed to spill on the ground.

I think they are still looking for that proof-text.

Not really. I look for certain attributes in their posts and gauge their temperament and spiritual maturity. And I pay attention to my response on all levels. I can usually boil that down to one word which communicates his effect on me.

Seeing with spiritual eyes takes time. Flesh will discount important qualities that the spirit emphasizes. The Holy Spirit is present throughout.

Agreed. One need only to see the stories you find from doing a search on "Purity Culture Fail" to see the damage inflicted on many men and women. (moreso women imo)

I don’t read things like that anymore and I’m careful what I take in regarding marriage too. Its taken a lot of time to clear my head and reach a place of peace. I understand my wiring and mindset. But I repel ideologies like theirs and others that appear manipulative or disrespectful.

If you are coming from their mindset, the reality was just unthinkable to them. Of course they wanted a scapegoat because it allowed them to keep their paper mache' fantasy of sexless women in place.

I don’t think you can trick or bribe people into abstinence. It doesn’t work. But that’s something that begins at home. Not a church. They’re supposed to reinforce the message. Not be the lone one they hear.

I told my daughter the truth. Teens are practicing on one another. The relationships won’t last. The consequences of disease are severe. Pregnancy means parenthood and no abortion. I’ll support the child but I won’t raise it.

She’s 28 with no husband or children. Truth always wins. ;-)

Which is where Purity Culture fell down. No practice. Even having a crush was considered "giving part of your heart away" that could never be retrieved.

Fear and loss of control. If women are sowing their oats the social structure collapses. They abandon their role as wives and mothers and succumb to wantonness.

You can’t place children in a bubble. You have to trust the things you’ve done. They’re going to stumble as you did.

I shared my foibles. We laugh about them. I’ve had my share!

We discussed all of that and more explicit subjects. I wanted her to hear the truth from me. Not from friends, strangers, or sex counselors. By the time 50 Shades came out she knew what it was and had no interest.

Oftentimes the more taboo a topic the more curious people become.
