I've recently become interested in watching a previously-shown TV series called "Touched by an Angel". Now I realise that the storyline is not completely mainline Christianity, but an interview with the producer makes it clear that the programme had to be made to be respectful to Christianity and I understand that at least some of the actors/actresses are Christians. Roma Downey is a brilliant actress and has me in tears most episodes when she reaches out to confused, frightened and lonely souls with warmth and sincerity and yet in one unusual episode she is also simultaneously able to play the part of the devil and an Angel very convincingly. Even the Angel of Death, aptly played by John Dye, is done with compassion and reassurance for the dying.
So much for my rather lengthy introduction. Watching this programme has got me thinking a lot about Angels and I was wondering what we know about them. I believe there are accounts of people seeing Angels when someone is dying and then there are various references to them in the Bible. Does anyone think it is possible that there are Angels amongst us as in the programme, visible or invisible? I like to think that God's Angels are watching over us and helping us, even if we aren't aware of it. What do others think?

When I think of angels I think of two kinds.

1. Holy angels
2. Unholy angels

Holy angels are described as doing God's will.
Unholy angels are described as opposing God's will.

The first will help Christians and mankind in general.
The second type will try to harm Christians and mankind in general.

I believe that when the scripture is talking about angels it is actually meaning, people. They're being called "messengers" and the word translated as "angel" is usually used for men and translated in such places as "messengers" or "ambassadors"

The scripture definitely says that you must take care to treat strangers with kindness, in case that stranger is actually an angel and you don't know it: Hebrews 13:2

Also that things like "cherubs" and "seraphs" are simply visions of, ministers of the Word of God: e.g. teachers, prophets, evangelists: messengers of God.

But as for winged people in yon cloudy sky? I'm not sure about that one.

Not much about them is covered by scripture.
I believe they are all in human form.

Certainly I believe in angels - usually people are meaning Holy Angels when they mention these. I believe there are guardian angels assigned to particular persons. And other angels, different kinds. We are not told a great deal about what they do, but it is their business to serve God.

I enjoyed that tv show too, not from a theological perspective, but more just because it was inspiring and uplifting and clean. There aren't many shows that fit that description.

I don't really believe that Holy Angels as a rule disguise themselves as humans and infiltrate human lives, building relationships, etc. as shown in the TV series. Most of the time, I think they are there and we never see them.

If you did see an angel you would be very afraid.(Remember the shepherds being so afraid when Jesus birth was declared) The ones recorded in the Bible are not at all what we have been portraying angels as and usually they will say, "do not be afraid".
The Seraphim have six wings and are fiery
The Thrones are described as a wheel within a wheel, the rims are covered in eyes.
The cherubim are not cute little baby angels, they actually have four heads which include the face of a man, an eagle and a lion.
There are angels that appear as ordinary men...they have no wings, in fact few angels have wings.
Angels can be invisible.
They are eternal, do not marry, spiritual beings, have free will, and are not meant to be worshipped. There are only 3 angels that are mentioned by name in the Bible...Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer. We do not die and become angels....ever...despite many that insist when a child dies that they are now one of God's angels.

Often when I hear reports of "beautiful angels with wings" appearing to someone I usually view it as false testimony caused by preconceived ideas.

Hello, Dwells, and welcome to CF! We are glad that you've joined us.

I agree with almost of what you've written here (maybe all, I'd have to check on the connections in the visual descriptions only). Very good information and a good summary of the important points.

BTW, if you need any help finding your way around the forums or have any questions, please let us know. But by your post count it looks like you're doing just fine.

Again I just wanted to welcome you to CF and I pray that you're blessed by being here!

By the way, if you happen to have Netflix streaming (or can find it elsewhere) I just watched a movie you might also like, called "Angel in the House". Judging by what you said here, I think you might especially enjoy it.
