  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

.....

What does this mean? Do the little children have angel in heaven that is connected to them? Do we all have an angel in heaven that corresponds to us?
Do some of our angels do something other than behold God? Is my angel less innocent/good than a child's angel?

Or does it mean that when a child dies it becomes a particularly devoted angel?
Do we become angels if we go to heaven?

Or is the soul actually an angel and we are in heaven at the same time as being on earth without knowing it? We are our own angel, so to speak?

Or... what does it mean?

Cheers

Angels are God's messengers.

My husband died recently & I had a dream a few days ago where by my husband was alive & well, it was a fabulous dream, so I believe that when we die our souls turn into angels.

When we are born the soul is this spark of light, a star is born & when we die this star carries on as an angel to comfort us in times of grief.

The legend of the Jews by BY LOUIS GINZBERG

Between morning and evening the angel carries the soul around, and shows her where she will live and where she will die, and the place where she will buried, and he takes her through the whole world, and points out the just and the sinners and all things. In the evening, he replaces her in the womb of the mother, and there she remains for nine months.

When the time arrives for man to quit this world, the same angel appears and asks him, "Dost thou recognize me?" And man replies, "Yes; but why dost thou come to me to-day, and thou didst come on no other day?" The angel says, "To take thee away from the world, for the time of thy departure has arrived." Then man falls to weeping, and his voice penetrates to all ends of the world, yet no creature hears his voice, except the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] alone. Man remonstrates with the angel, "From two worlds thou didst take me, and into this world thou didst bring me." But the angel reminds him: "Did I not tell thee that thou wert formed against thy will, and thou wouldst be born against thy will, and against thy will thou wouldst die? And against thy will thou wilt have to give account and reckoning of thyself before the Holy One, blessed be He."

I do not see the concept of guardian angels there, I think that's reading something there that isn't there.
The children are children of God, so their angels are God's angels. Their angels are not angels of darkness, but angels of light. It's specifying 'their', not b/c they belong to an angel, but b/c they belong to the light.

Our angels are no better or no worse b/c God's on each one of our team as his children. When you lose, it's not b/c your angels are a loser. God is over the angels & he knows what he's doing.

So I do not see the concept of you turning into an angel or a child turning into an angel there, either. Is this the part people get that idea from? We know from other parts of the Bible angels are warriors, messengers, & spiritual beings created separate from humans, & not humans, but not divine either. The angels are actually in awe of us. So a part that may appear to be linking humans & angels together as one, like the children are here present tense but they're as angels future tense, we need to be looking at the whole Bible & not one part to understand that that's not right

This is one of those verses where folks will spent a lot of mental energy debating the meaning of “little ones”, “angels”, and their relationship between those in heaven and those on Earth. Some even will interpret these verses to justify the belief that all believers have a guardian angel. However, I believe that is a bit simpler than that.

Let’s start looking at the setting of this verse. Jesus is gathered with His disciples and they are asking Him who the greatest is. They want to know who the top dog is. So He brings a child into the group and tells them that unless they become like this child there will be serious consequences. They need to learn to humble themselves just like this child to become the greatest in His kingdom (Verses 3-4). So Jesus here is saying that this is how His followers should be, like little ones. They should not walk around proud and puffed up but instead they need to humble themselves.

In verses 5 and 6, Jesus tells the disciples that when they welcome those who are humble and weak, they also welcome Him. He then warns not to let anyone lead these little ones to sin. In verses 7 and 9, Jesus goes even further and warns then to not be guilty of tempting these little ones or they will be judged. He reminds them of how vulnerable these little one are.

In verse 10, I believe that His little ones are all of the believers. In addition, the parable about the sheep that follows also uses images to refer to believers, in this case sheep. Secondly, the verse is probably translated correctly as angels is the correct translation for the Greek word used. The angels in this verse are in heaven with access to God so they are not on earth guarding believers or little children but they give testimony to God about the little ones. God has an army of Angels that testify to God about believers. The language is similar to that of the courts of kings where requests and reports are given to the king by people that represent others. Hebrews 1:14 states “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to provide service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?” which also describes spirits ministering for the believers so the concept is already in scripture.

So to me, verse 10 is merely saying to not look down on these little ones (believers). Take care of them and don’t lead them to sin because God has an army and they are assigned to them. The army reports to Him. Hope this helps.

You may have heard of the idea of a "guardian angel". The popular conception of this is not something I think any Christian should endorse; but historically Christianity does acknowledge (on the basis of biblical texts such as this one) that there are angels who watch over us. So, the simplest explanation here is that Jesus is talking about the angels who have been tasked by God to watch over the little ones.

Does that mean I have a specific angel assigned to watch over me? I mean, maybe? That has been a belief many Christians have had.

But it is just as possible that out of God's love and care for His creation He tasks angels with watching over us--and it doesn't have to be any more specific than that.

As for the other stuff:

Humans don't become angels. Angels and humans are categorically different kinds of creatures--humans are humans and will always be human; angels are angels and will always be angels. So no, people don't become angels, the soul isn't an angel--the soul is simply an aspect of my humanity. The best way to think of the human soul is that the soul speaks of the rational, relational, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of being human. All creatures have a soul--they have the breath of life (that's what the most basic meaning of "soul" is, "breath"); the human soul is unique and distinct in that it is a rational soul; we feel we think we have a rich and complex mind, and most important we can have a relationship with God as moral creatures that were made to reflect God's goodness and love into the world. You aren't a soul with a body; and you aren't a body with a soul--you're a human being, body-and-soul.

Angels are angels.

Hello.
Thanks for asking these questions.

Asking other questions might help.
Was Jesus referring to literal children, or his followers who are indeed 'little ones'?
In that case, are not the angels ministering to these one, and therefore it can be rightly said 'their angels'? Hebrews 1:14

From the answers to these questions, we need not conclude that little children have an angel in heaven that is connected to them, or we all have an angel in heaven that corresponds to us?
There really is no reason to believe this, since the scriptures clearly show that with regard to angels, they are associated with the declaring of the good news, and assisting those who carry out that work - ministering to them, and assisting them in bringing people to salvation.. Acts 8:26; Hebrews 1:14; Revelation 14:6

I'll like to share the scriptural answer to the other questions you asked.
Do we become angels if we go to heaven?
The Bible says...
  • Those who go to heaven are given an immortal body like Jesus' which is higher than angels, although spirit, like angels. 1 Corinthians 15:53, 54; Philippians 3:21; 1 Corinthians 6:3; Luke 20:36

Or is the soul actually an angel and we are in heaven at the same time as being on earth without knowing it? We are our own angel, so to speak?
The Bible says...
  • Man is a soul. Man does not have a living soul inside of him. The soul is the person, or life of the person. Not a living entity. Genesis 2:7; Those who go to heaven die, and are afterward resurrected to life and given a body to live tin heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:42-48; 2 Corinthians 5:1-4

Thank you.
