The one that is taken is killed. The other is left alive. Notice at 24:39 the flood takes away. Those that were taken by the flood died. See also John:

Jhn 17:15 “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.

It is obvious , that it is not speaking of the so-called RAPTURE as there is NOT a Greek word called Rapture at all .

# 1 is it speaking to Gentiles ??

# 2 Is it speaking to Greeks ?/

# 3 Maybe to Scythians ??

# 4 Maybe to the BODY of Christ ?

For the most part it is speaking to -or about- Jews. See Matthew 24:

Mat 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation...

Compare to The Jewish War by Flavius Josephus:

Chapter 1

Whereas the war which the Jews made with the Romans hath been the greatest of all those, not only that have been in our times, but, in a manner, of those that ever were heard of; both of those wherein cities have fought against cities, or nations against nations;

...and there shall be famines...

Chapter 8

However, he laid waste the country about Pella, though even there he was under great hardship; for his army was afflicted with famine.

...and earthquakes...

Chapter 19

In the mean time, the fame of this earthquake elevated the Arabians to greater courage

I did read Matt 24:7 and here is what I found .

The Greek words , SHALL RISE // EGEIRO , is a verb in the Greek FUTURE TENSE , in other words has YET to happen , and is in the Greek INDICATIVE MOOD and means you better believe it .

How could it have not been future tense. It was said before it happened. It doesn't mean it is future tense to us.

I look to the companion scripture in Luke 17 for my answer.

Luk 17:30-36 KJV 30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. 35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Most take verse 30 and apply it to what was said in prior verses. Instead of "even thus..." referring to what was said, I take it to refer to what will be said. For notice how v.31 begins..."In that day,..." What day is that? It is the day the Son of man is revealed. In Matt 24:40, it is relevant to "the coming/ parousia of the Son of man", which is relegated to the days after Noah entered the ark, which took place 7 days before the flood. Entering the ark was the penultimate sign that the flood was coming. Jesus said that in regards to those who (knowingly or unknowingly) did not recognize the truth of the matter, that the flood was imminent. They will not know/ understand with the mind, what is about to take place. Their destruction will come like a thief in the night:

Mat 24:39 KJV And knew [did not understand when] until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

This "... COMING of the Son of man be." Is the parousia of Christ. It's not referring to all the signs that precede the parousia, for they have already happened. If people have failed to recognize all the foretold signs that Jesus gave, BY the time the parousia/ revealing of Christ occurs, they will have no idea of the times Leading up to Jesus's coming on a white horse. He will come like a thief to them. It will take ALL of them by surprise, and not just half, even as Matt 24:40 speaks of where one is taken and one is not. So the time in which HALF are taken does not refer to the time which follows the parousia, but rather refers to the time which precedes it. But it is not the rapture itself which shall destroy half of everyone, but to those left behind. Another parallel passage is that of the 10 virgins. 5 enter in and 5 are left out. It tells me that only half of professing Christians (those who say Lord, open unto us) will recognize the signs leading up to the parousia of Christ. If they don't understand by the time the parousia occurs, they most likely never will [understand]. They will "know not until destruction takes them ALL away", just as Luke 17 also speaks of. Those who do not recognize when the time comes for Jesus to be revealed, will ALL be taken away.

Now, I don't believe that the parousia/ revealing/ rapture will take place 7 days/ years before the total destruction comes, but rather that the signs that Jesus foretold will begin 7 years before that destruction comes. The "sign of the Son of man in heaven, Matt24:30" will be one of the last signs before the parousia occurs. Then, ALL OF THE 12 Tribes, the remnant, will see the Son of man COMING IN CLOUDS OF HEAVEN WITH POWER AND GLORY, aka the rapture.

and there are more than that !!

The ones TAKEN into Judgment !!

The word for taken is paralambano.

G3880

Original: παραλαμβάνω

Transliteration: paralambanō

Phonetic: par-al-am-ban'-o

Thayer Definition
:

  1. to take to, to take with one's self, to join to one's self
    1. an associate, a companion
    2. metaphorically
      1. to accept or acknowledge one to be such as he professes to be
      2. not to reject, not to withhold obedience
  2. to receive something transmitted
    1. an office to be discharged
    2. to receive with the mind
      1. by oral transmission: of the authors from whom the tradition proceeds
      2. by the narrating to others, by instruction of teachers (used of disciples)
Origin: from G3844 and G2983

TDNT entry: 04:11,5

Part(s) of speech: Verb

Strong's Definition: From G3844 and G2983; to receive near, that is, associate with oneself (in any familiar or intimate act or relation); by analogy to assume an office; figuratively to learn: - receive, take (unto, with).

To receive near; associate with oneself; to join to oneself; not to reject; to acknowledge one to be such as he processes to be.

All judgment has been given to Jesus because he is the Son of man. What judgment is that? Resurrection judgment... unto life OR damnation. Jesus will receive unto himself those worthy of the resurrection of life...

Joh 5:27-29 KJV 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Those taken, will be taken into himself, unto the resurrection of life. Those left will be left behind to face the day of Lord.

Paul uses the Greek word PAROUSIA , 7 times 1 Thess 2:1 , 13 , 19 , 4:15 and 5:23 and in 2 Thess 2:1 , 8 , 9

and there are more than that!!

NONE of the words, parousia, erchomai, epiphaneia, refer to the time when Jesus shall come riding a white horse... not even apokalupsis or apocalyptic. They are all pointing to the time when Jesus BEGINS executing judgment, unto life and damnation. The only one that really doesn't is:

Rev 16:15 KJV Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

To reiterate what is said in Matt 24:39-40. The days before the flood, when Noah had entered into the ark, when they ALL did not know the hour of the impending flood, shall be likened unto the parousia of Christ. I.e., the days after the parousia will be likened unto the days (before the flood) when Noah entered the ark. It will be the same days as Peter spoke of...

2Pe 3:3-7 KJV 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Men shall begin to say, "where is the promise of his coming/ parousia", AFTER the parousia, when countless numbers of men and women will seemingly have missed out on both the rapture and the judgment of wicked men. When they shall say, "Peace and safety", sudden destruction will then come upon them unawares...

Unprecedented peace will follow those days of tribulation, (that precedes the rapture). Unprecedented peace will follow the rapture, and men will say, "where is the promise of his coming".

1Th 5:2-4 KJV 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that
that day should overtake you as a thief.

The rapture/ parousia will not come like a thief upon those who watch and are sober, because Jesus gave us all the signs to look for that will preceed the rapture.

1Th 5:5-10 KJV 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

Half of professing Christians will fail to recognize the "signs of his coming", as per the disciples' question.

When Jesus comes for those who are both ready and watching...

Mat 24:42-44 KJV 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

When Jesus says, "... ye KNOW NOT what hour..." And "... if the goodman had KNOWN...", HE/YE would have watched for the signs of his coming. When Jesus said that YE/HE does not KNOW the hour, JESUS is saying that we have no idea of how bad (to know with the senses, eido [G1492]) those days are going to be... WHEN HE COMES. He is not talking about knowing with the mind of understanding, [aka when], but rather he is talking about knowing with the senses how bad it will be. Paul said that we, who are of the light, will not be overtaken like a thief in the night. We are not appointed unto that wrath, but we are appointed to obtain the salvation... the resurrection of life... of our bodies.

We need to be "ready ALSO". IF you, or anyone, is not expecting to be here when ALL of the events of Matt 24:4-30 take place, (by not expecting to personally witness) all of those things, chances are you will not be ready, and will not survive until he comes, or you won't be one of those taken when he comes! Truly, a great many will be ready, but will still die before he comes at the parousia. Watching for those signs to happen is a key component to being ready when that day approaches.

Heb 10:23-25 KJV 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

1Th 5:6 KJV Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Be Blessed

When the foolish virgins asked to be let in...

Mat 25:10-13 KJV 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. 13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

[EDIT TO ADD THIS: The text clearly conveys the truth that the wise are the ones who were ready. Being ready, as I have already said, comes from watching for and expecting those things that Jesus spoke of. When Jesus shall come, no man has known the times and seasons that the Father has put in his own power. ]

It is after the bridegroom/Jesus has come/ erchomai. The foolish half, representing those who profess to "know" Christ, are left behind, and yet are alive to say, "let us in!". But Jesus will say, "I KNOW you not". Experientially [knowing with the senses] they do not (did not) have a personal relationship with Christ. They will be left behind... and not taken.

Be Blessed

The one that is taken is killed. The other is left alive. Notice at 24:39 the flood takes away. Those that were taken by the flood died. See also John:

What would you call Matt 24:40 since there is NOT a Greek word called RAPTURE ??

dan p
That isn't a rapture. There is no rapture. One is taken, meaning he is killed. One is left, meaning he is left alive. The two in the field are caught in the open while the two in their bed are suffering from plague.

For the most part it is speaking to -or about- Jews. See Matthew 24:

Mat 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation...

Compare to The Jewish War by Flavius Josephus:

Chapter 1

Whereas the war which the Jews made with the Romans hath been the greatest of all those, not only that have been in our times, but, in a manner, of those that ever were heard of; both of those wherein cities have fought against cities, or nations against nations;

...and there shall be famines...

Chapter 8

However, he laid waste the country about Pella, though even there he was under great hardship; for his army was afflicted with famine.

...and earthquakes...

Chapter 19

In the mean time, the fame of this earthquake elevated the Arabians to greater courage
This would agree with the teaching of John the Baptist preaching the coming wrath, and the way of escape.

Mt 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Lu 3:7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Ac 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

How could it have not been future tense. It was said before it happened. It doesn't mean it is future tense to us.
I can NOT cannot change the Greek text , just because it does not speaking to us !!

Eph 1:4 says that we were CHOSEN BEFORE // PRO , the over throw of the world .

The one that is taken is killed. The other is left alive. Notice at 24:39 the flood takes away. Those that were taken by the flood died. See also John:

Jhn 17:15 “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.
Basically, the subject is the same as Leviticus 26:17. Obey the Perfect Logic & Law of Yahweh/YahShua and be a great people; disobey and those who hate you rule over you.

Either Luke 17:34-36 or Matt 24:40-41. But I think I was using Luke's account to point out that there are 2 distinct happenings associated with the revealing/parousia of Christ.
One of the two events refers to one taken and one left. The other speaks of ALL being destroyed or "took away". My point being that the sections speaking of one being taken/ paralambano (in Luke) and one left is to be tied to Luke 17:30 WHEN the Son of man is revealed. And the "days of the Son of man" refers to the time period after (ala) WHEN he is revealed and lasting until the day of destruction when ALL shall be destroyed. During that time (akin to the 7 days that Noah was in the ark ) just before the flood actually came and destroyed them all, those remaining will be ignorant of the impending destruction that will come upon the WHOLE (not half) world. The reference to the half TAKEN/lambano does not equate to the whole world, but rather equates to 5 wise virgins and 5 foolish virgins... those who profess to "know" Christ. To which Christ says to the foolish, "I do not KNOW you". The foolish profess to have a relationship with Christ (eido), but in fact only know him (ginosko) with an understanding of the mind.
You can get at the root of differentiation between the wise and foolish from Matt 7;21-27. The wise [virgins] are those who hear and keep the sayings of Christ. And the foolish are those who hear, but do not keep His sayings.

Mat 7:21-27 KJV 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in THAT DAY, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Looks like He was saying, the wise person obeys His Logic, Word and Law. while those who ignore Him lose big; And if He was including Yerusalem as part of the story, that certainly came to pass. Those who got out when there was a lapse in the surrouding were saved. Those that stayed contrary to His advice/warning perished miserably from Pharisees, Edomtes, starvation etc. more than from the Roman Army that had been trained by the Apostle Paul.
