  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Original Sin is that we inherit the guilt of the first sin. Ancestral Sin is that we inherit the consequences of that sin, such as death and disease. The Orthodox Church does not hold to the belief of Original Sin, but it does to Ancestral Sin. As for Scriptures, I don't know any so someone else can supply them.

Hope that helps (if I am mistaken on any points, any Orthodox feel free to correct me)

Original sin, so termed and understood is completely western idea, unknown in the east. By his theory, accepted in all of the west, the sin of Adam, thus called Original, is like some infection that spreads from generation to generation through the knowledge of a man and a woman. Thus we are all guilty as we are born. From this idea, lot of wrong theological postulates have been later developed in the west. (Immaculate conception of Theotokos just one of them).

The Orthodox Church, rightly, does not hold this view. The Greek Fathers have declared this sin to be Ancestral sin. Which means that it is exactly THAT. Ancestral sin. That means that Adam is guilty for his own sin and that for that sin, the only person responsible is him, Adam.
We do not assume his sin upon birth, but rather his fallen nature of suffering and death.

Also we belive that Ss Adam and Eve have 'talked with Lord alot' after they sinned, for in Orthodox Church, they are considered Saints, something that west does not do.

So, the Orthodox church does not believe we are born into sin?

Your Brother in Christ,

Michael

We are born into fallen world with the fallen nature, but Adam's sin is (was) his.

I think you can say that we are born into sin (but you have to define it as world of sin, the world where un-natural is natural and wrong is right and so on...).

Although in order to guard the doctrine of redemption and salvation and all others that stem from or are connected to Ancestral sin, I would rather say that
we are born into fallen world, with the fallen nature and that Original sin is (was) of Adam.
