  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

An FYI. Terror from the Right

I believe Huckabee came right out after that guy shot up the women's health center in Colorado and called it terrorism.
He did it out of politics. He did it to draw attention away from his brand of pro-life activism, and he did also reply that Planned Parenthood are as bad as the people who murdered people at PP.

He has no credibility.

Huckabee is for the death penalty. He is not pro-life.

Listen, I am no Huckabee fan, but he did call out the Colorado shooting as terrorism, period.

My opposition to the premise of this thread was due to, what I felt was, and agenda-driven way of presenting the data in efforts for people to try to make a point about their political opponents.
This has happened here since this forum started. I rarely see you criticizing members on the right. Why is this? It seems that you believe you are a moderate but you certainly don't post like one....

Two words: 3D printing.
Even if you can make a fully functional firearm with a 3D printer (and I seem to recall it's "not that simple") it's still a fact that a. making a still is easier than making a 3D printer, and b. all the 3D printers in the world aren't going to make you ammunition.

But we're getting a little bogged down in hypotheticals. It's not as though there's a total gun ban in America's foreseeable future.

Correct. But, where there is a will (to make money) people tend to find a way.
Of course. I'm just saying the comparison between drug (including alcohol) and firearm prohibition is not exact, because the manufacturing step of the process is so much more complicated. If it required heavy industry to make cocaine, there'd be a lot less of it around. Sure, there would still be some, but a lot less, is my point.

I would imagine, if guns became illegal in the United States, much of the manufacturing of illegal guns would be carried out in other countries and smuggled into the US, just as illegal drugs are now.

That's the thing though, it easier to smuggled things into US than into UK.

My point stands. Manufacturing a modern firearm, not to mention ammunition to service it, requires a great deal of capital investment, machinery, workshop space, and logistical support. It's not really the sort of thing you can set up in a garage or a hidden jungle laboratory, unlike drug factories.

Yes, I'm sure that there would be manufacturers in other countries who would try to supply illegal arms to the US. Some of them would succeed, too. But they'd have a hard time doing so in any significant amount. Smuggling firearms isn't like smuggling drugs.

ecco:
I'm advocating an all out gun ban.

A gun ban from this point forward, or are you advocating taking away all the guns from people who already have them?

I am advocating taking away all the guns from people who already have them.

I am also a realist and know that nothing like this would/could ever happen. Instead we'll just continue killing 10,000 of ourselves every year while we focus on the 10 or 20 that the MUSLIM TERRORISTS kill and spend Millions of dollars and continue to erode our liberties trying to stop THEM.

You know, we tried this with prohibition many years ago with alcohol and all that did was allow the criminal element to provide what people wanted and readily were able to get, with money. Same with illegal drugs, all you need is money and if you don't have any, you steal some, to get what you want.
When you buy a drink, you got pleasure from it. When you buy drugs you get pleasure from them. Why should either of these be illegal?

Many people, especially these days, are buying guns out of fear. This is true of homeowners as well as gangbangers. Why shouldn't they be made illegal?
