  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If the items ended up in a museum or archive, I'd be fine with that. My problem is that their display is usually part of exactly what you say you oppose - the re-writing of history.
How so?

I talked about the Lost Cause narrative in prior posts. The Sons & Daughters of the Confederacy can say they stand for honor, defense of home, etc. But every time you ride on that spoke you find it pivots about slavery.

If the connection between the Confederate Flag and slavery were acknowledged, I'd be a lot less resistant. However, the Lost Cause narrative takes a paternalistic view of Southern culture that is unacceptable. I realize you'll never get everyone to agree, but official recognition (as Delaware did) would go a long way. And to clarify, all I'm asking for is official recognition. Those who ask for reparations, etc. go too far IMHO.

The confederate flag had nothing to do with slavery. If you look and do your research you will find more pictures of slave ships with the American flag. The history of the confederate flag actually has a Christian background. Here is a little background on the Christian meaning of the flag: http://oddgarfield.deviantart.com/j...essage-behind-the-Confederate-flags-548449252 . God Bless :)

If you read the comments posted on that link, someone asks about historical references for the claims, but none are given. Anyone can say nearly anything they want in an Internet blog.

The confederate flag is an important symbol of America's history and the South. Getting rid of it would be getting rid of history!
Could not the same claim be made for the Nazi battle flag - being an important symbol of Germany's history?

Are they not now seen together?

Originally the Nazi flag was a pagan symbol used all over the world. Hitler just adopted it

Let's also not forget the Confederate's flag role as a symbol of racial intimidation at the hands of the KKK, and the role of racism during the long years of segregation in the South.

So you are really unaware of how the KKK used the confederate flag as a symbol of violence and intimidation?

I know it is a black and white picture, but those KKK members marching in front of the United States Capitol are not carrying the Confederate flag.
