  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I knew you wouldn't read it. I knew you wouldn't understand it either.

Oh if I glanced through it. Sounds like they were talking out of both sides of their mouths. Sometimes it mentions a particle, other times a wave......

but what do you personally think it is?

Both, neither and 'it depends'

Have a read up on the history of quantum theory. It'll show you how ideas about light have developed from understanding it first as waves, then Einstein showed it can act as particles in the form of photons. Later developments have shown just how weird, but awesome, light and the whole of the quantum world is!

It looks like gradyll has problems understanding the fact that it is an over simplification to treat matter and light as particles and waves.

I am sorry did I say that? I thought I said that sometimes it acts like a wave (frequency) and other times a particle.

but not one person other than a fellow christian has attempted to tackle what a photon is in their own words.

good Job, best review yet! With all the science folks here, the athiests sure seem to be stumped for words. lol

Ok, now what?

Oh I was just taking notice, thats all. It's an amazing thing, even the simplest of light when we (collectively) don't really know what it is?

amazing spectacle it is.

When you claim that people who try to explain it properly are "talking out of both sides of their mouths" why should anyone give it a shot? It is clear that you would not understand it and would attack the person explaining it to you.

Even so here goes. On a quantum level the idea of a wave or a particle does not quite work. You specifically wanted to know what a photon is. Light is delivered in small packets of energy called photons. This packet of energy in some way acts like a particle. The amount of energy that a specific frequency has is always the same per photon. In other words they are "pieces of light". Where a packet of light is at any one moment will depend upon what it meets on its way to its eventual target. And its location will never be a point. It is a probability function. You can only calculate the odds that it will be within a certain area. You can never say exactly where the packet of energy will be.

Does that help?

So light is carried by energy? But the light is not the energy. I want evidence. Please give me observable evidence that this is true. How can you observe energy?

the reason why I attack your arguments is that they are not coherent. I truly understand what your saying, but I have a question.... How is it possible a light particle acts like energy, waves-frequency, and particles? Not on a quantum level like you said. Yet nevertheless. We really don't know what a photon is yet in science.

Btw I was just replying to someones comment on "what energy do you want to know about" in a egotistical manner.

what about the photon?

Light is a from of energy. Light is "pure" energy.

That energy comes in measured packets called photons.

On a gross scale the probability calculations simplify to make it look like light is a wave of continuous power.

How things look on a macro scale may have nothing with what something looks like on a micro scale.

Light is an attribute of God. If light is a form of energy please tell me what darkness is?

The weirdness of light seeming to behave as both a wave and a particle isn't a failure of coherence, it's a failure of both "wave" and "particle" as analogies for how packets of light radiation behave.

Ripples in water and bouncing balls might be easy to visualise for people, but that doesn't make them perfect as models for the atomic and subatomic universe.
