am I saved or not?

I have been confused when it comes to this issue. Some say that once a person has accepted Jesus as their savior they are saved forever no matter what. Some say that their are works involved after acceptance. So i have done a little studying on the subject and i am hoping some of you can help me get a better understanding concerning my personal salvation. In john 1and 12 it says "but as many as received Him to those He gave the right to become children of God. To me it sounds like there is much left to be done before I become a true child of God. In 1st peter 1and22-25 it says Since you have purified your souls in obeying the the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because all flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. the grass withers, and its flowers fall away, But the word of the Lord endures forever. I hope some of you out there will way in and share your wisdom with me. God bless

Faith is what saves you but as the book of James teaches faith without works is dead. If you love God and are Really committed you life you goals you person will begin to grow and change to more fully reflect God's image. It does not happen overnight and it is slower then most New Christians are content with. In fact this is often one of the first places demonic forces will attack. Many many young Christians begin to doubt their faith at times (myself included when I was younger). That is when it is handy to look up and memorize verses on assurance. It is very easy for a young Christian and even old Christians to take their eyes off Christ and look at their works but it is important to remember even though we are justified as soon as we repent commit and believe in Christ but the fight is not over God now wants to use us as imperfect and flaws as we are. There will always while we are on earth be areas we need to repent in and always things we could do better but the question is are u moving forward in Christ slow moderately or fast or are we stagnant in Christ. If we are stagnant it doesn't mean you are not saved but you need to start asking yourself some serious questions. Hope this is helpful, peace and blessings to you.

No one can say for sure if you are 100% saved or not except for God.

But I believe you are saved through faith. Not of works.

Eph 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Jesus told the thief on the cross, that because he believed in Him, "Today you shall be with me in Paradise". What works did the thief do to earn his salvation? I can't think of any. So it had to be his faith in Christ.

As the above poster said, works are not required for salvation, but they are an indication that someone truly believes.

I agree that we cannot "earn" our salvation by our works. What I am taking away from john1and12 is that where it says "as many as received Him"(or accepted Him), "to those He gave the right to become children of God"(or now that I have accepted Him I can begin to become a child of God by reading and more importantly, by doing what the word tells me I should be doing. I think that as I become more obedient to God, to His word and His will I will become a true child of His by His grace. Am I way off base?

You are a child of God the moment you accept Christ into your heart as Lord and Savior.

What you can now do is turn away from past sins, since Christ has given you power of them, and begin to work towards fulfilling God's mission for you in life. Getting closer to Him in a personal relationship. Getting involved with other Christians. You are now justified in Christ. Now the process of sanctification in Christ begins.

If you are asking the question with sincerity, your name is probably written in Heaven. Most people of the world don't even want to think about God. Don't worry about when you were saved and if you can go in and out of it. God doesn't see time that way, so neither should we. God knew whether we were saved before we were born.

But as you said, there is still much left to be done. While we can experience the peace and joy of our confidence in God's grace, it doesn't mean we should be complacent with our time on Earth. We should "press on towards the goal" as Paul described in Philippians 3:12-14.

What does that mean? We should actively seek out the wisdom of the Holy Spirit through prayer, Bible study, and other means of learning. It also means that we should make every effort to do good works. Not because we need them to earn salvation, but because we should keep progressing in our journey of faith.

John 3:16 states "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
So it is clear from this verse that if you believe in Jesus, the Son of God, then you are saved.

But that's not all. Many people use verses like John 3:16 to finalize that everything is OK, as long as you believe in Christ you are saved no matter what you do. That is not true. Do not be deceived. We need to live holy lives because without holiness no one will see the Lord.

But among you there must not be even A HINT of sexual immorality, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Ephesians 5:3
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person-such a man is an idolater-has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. Eph 5:5-7

Also another area we need to work on and develop is in the area of love. Unconditional love, agape love. We MUST forgive or we will not be forgiven of our sins.

The man who says ,"I know Him," but does not DO what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone OBEYS his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:4-6

I for one strongly believe that faith in Jesus alone will not save us. We should also try our best to lead a sinless life. For this you need to fervently seek the Lord. Ask Him to help you to be holy, ask Him to help you forgive others. Pray for even your enemies. Read the Word. Ask God for understanding, wisdom and Knowledge. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Walk with the Lord daily. It should be a daily walk or else the devil could creep in some way. There is no other short cut method. We MUST obey God and His rules, the dos and don'ts and His commandments.

am I saved or not?

The Bible is clear, our language is not.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Believeth = pisteuō = trust in

We often use our feelings to see if we "feel" saved. This is not a good measure

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

While many people muddy the water about salvation, most people are looking for assurance of salvation.

Christian Pioneer - How can I know for sure I am saved?

The biggest reason people doubt their salvation is that we keep sinning. If we read Galatians, we can see that there is a divide in the Christian life between walking in the flesh and walking in the Spirit. Satan runs this world (for now and insofar as he is allowed by God). Satan has designed the world to resonate with the flesh and to cripple Christians in their sincere desire to walk closer to their Savior.

Salvation is by grace through faith. Faith grasps onto the Savior and the forgiveness of sins won at the cross. If you believe this, you are saved, there is nothing for YOU to do to earn it.

We cannot know if we are saved and will enter Heaven until we die and are judged. If you reject Jesus on your death bed even though you had been a Christian your whole life then you will go to hell. We are not God and we do not know the future so we cannot say we are saved. Being saved is not something that happens at a specific point in time, it is a process that lasts your entire life.

Simply saying you believe in Jesus means nothing to him. Jesus recognizes his true followers by what they do and their adherence to the will of God.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21)

Faith without works is dead.
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. (James 2:26)

You can have confidence that you will be saved if you believe in Jesus and do not commit mortal sins but this is not something you can say is guaranteed because we do not know if we will stay on this path.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, (Philippians 2:12)

I disagree with Football.

I believe in reincarnation on earth, and a very select people will be re-established in Heaven if the Lord so pleases.

As a believe in the forgiveness of all sins, I believe eternal condemnation is in fact a less privileged existence in the Kingdom of Heaven, which will ultimately be everywhere after Christ returns to Earth.

I believe all references to Hell made by Jesus were in fact references to a life on earth which leads to things that Displease God, and Hell was never intended as reference to fiery pit. But in harsh reality.
It is better to leave your friends and be disgraced before them than it is to allow them to bring you into conflict with the Lord.
It is better to not spend your time with one who sees nothing and looks for nothing but what corrupts the mind heart and soul.
It is better to be without aid in your own struggles than it is to be used as the persecutor of others.
feet. eyes. hands.
In these examples Hell is in fact reference to the calamity that befalls mortal men on earth.

My advice Byhislove is that you do not dread torments,
"The fear of God is to hate what he hates." &
"the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom"
Do either of these passages refer to fear as a trembling?
Fear is an understanding that stands up for you an instinctual fence that leads you down the straight path of the Lords way.
However be conscience, and "afraid", that you, as you are, who you are, will be brought into the Kingdom of heaven with or without your accordance and when you do,
how prepared will you be to deal with your relationships with:

every person who was less fortunate than you, or wronged by you
wronged by someone like you. Your relationship with yourself. and first most
the relationship you will have with the Lord!

Christ accepts you moment to moment,
but when you are left for all of eternity to grasp a greater understanding of your own mind. Fear a Heaven where you are not even someone you are comfortable getting to know.

BYHISLOVE-

We are saved through our accepting God's mercy rather than his judgement. No one will obtain eternal life through our being good enough, but only through our acepting that God's own work was sufficient to earn for us the salvation which we could never earn for ourselves:

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished - he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:19-26,NIV)

and

What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone." As it is written:

"See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." (Romans 9:30-33,NIV)

Logic would dictate that in order to repay God for Jesus' sacrifice we should obey a set of laws. But if we were capable of obeying any set of laws (other than the ones we ourselves write) Jesus' sacrifice wouldn't have been necessary in the first place. So God's gifts include not only the righteousness necessary for salvation, but also an entirely new nature through which we can lead our lives in accordance with his will:

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. (Galatians 5:16-26,NIV)

The motivations listed as 'the acts of the sinful nature' are the root cause of all sinful acts. They are also our original nature, the one we are all born with. Nothing we do which emanates from any of these motivations can be seen as anything other than evil, because the motivations are themselves evil. But we can no more subdue them ourselves than we can change the color of our eyes. We need God's direct intervention in order to accomplish this, and we get that intervention as a result of our accepting his Son's sacrifice of atonement.

As a consequence of our accepting Jesus' sacrifice, God's Spirit comes to dwell within us, and he doesn't come emptyhanded. It is he, rather than we ourselves, who subdues our original, sinful nature, and it is he, rather than we ourselves, who implants within us the new nature that we need in order to successfully live Christian lives. The motivations of this new nature are those listed as 'the fruit of the Spirit', and it is with those motivations as the impetus for our actions, and only then, that the actions have assurance of conforming to what God wants of us. Their importance to everything we do is underscored by the words which immediately follow them: "Against such things there is no law."

So for both our salvation and our proper behavior as Christians our trust needs to rest not in ourselves, but in God. It is God who has accomplished all that is necessary in order for us to obtain eternal life, and it is also God who himself restructures our nature so that we can lead lives worthy of being called 'Christian'. In both instances all is accomplished through his power rather than our own. That is why faith in God, rather than in ourselves, is the foundation of Christianity.
