  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My question of the day; Am I destroying my PS2? I will explain..........

Usually a PS2 is silent, smooth, and (relatively) soundless. Recently, however, whenever I startup my PS2, a very much loud "grinding" sound comes from within, susally lasting anywhere from . This happens whenever I reset my PS2. (I believe it is the laser moving back into position)
What I do is, I never just "reset" my PS2, to the point where the red light just stays on all the time; I just shut off the power button. Sometimes I will even do this in mid-game. I this destroying my PS2, or at least causing the loud, disruptive "grinding" sound within my system?

Thanks.

(Another friend of my was saying his did the same thing, saing something about a "drive gear")

(Another friend had told me never to shut off a PS2 like that, but to reset it first)

I believe I found the answer at Wikipedia;

Technical Issues

Disc Read Error

Owners of early PS2 models purchased from launch until spring 2002 commonly reported faulty optical drives in their consoles. The earliest drives suffered from a constantly misaligning laser lens but later defects were the result of a shift in voltage to the laser itself. The first problem was relatively easy to remedy, but it required opening the machine's casing and tweaking a cog that controlled the lens' distance from the discs it was supposed to read, thus voiding the warranty. This usually did not matter, as in most cases the warranty already had expired by the time such problems began to appear. The second fix involved the use of an oscillator. As time went on, more and more drives began breaking down and a class action lawsuit was filed against Sony. They had the option of either paying the requested fines in damages, or offering free repair and replacements at their discretion.[10] Sony chose the latter and, until February 2005, they honored their agreement. In the UK owners suffering from this flaw must pay Sony £50 (as of spring 2005) to get their machines repaired.
A second lawsuit is being filed against Sony for all of the above, plus claims that defective hardware is damaging media discs. The first hearings were set to commence in April and May, 2005.[11]
As of 2006, Sony is offering exchanges of factory-refurbished consoles for broken out-of-warranty consoles for a charge of US $45.
Another issue causing DRE's is wear on the part coupling the head assembly to the worm gear that moves the laser. Symptom is a loud repetitive clicking sound. The part is commonly plastic and prone to wear or break. Metal replacements are available from third parties.

Well another idea is to remove the disk that you have in the rom and then restart your ps2. If it no longer makes the noise than you know its in your rom. If it still makes the noise than it is in the cooling fan- or hard drive if you have one.

I have a ps2 that i bought the day they were released and i have this problem often. It actualy goes to a screen that says "disk read error". Im not saying that your rom isnt going bad (or dirty) But you dont have that exact problem.

I bought a ps2 for my girlfrien in the following febuary and it doesnt have any problems.
