• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Am I bound to hasty promises?

Sometimes when I think about or see money my brain will burst out some promise about giving it all to God. This shouldn't be a problem except I feel guilty because eventually I'll promise all of my money away and be unable to pay bills and live.

Well, I think the Lord knows you need money to pay your bills and live, and He probably understands and appreciates your willingness to be generous. So no, He won't hold you to it.

But you might be able to take a certain amount each week or whenever and put it to a Christian charity, or your church, or something worthy that glorifies God.

God forgives sin and speaks much about keeping your vows and taming your tongue. You have promised what you cannot deliver and recognize that it is wrong so repent in this area and all will be forgiven. Start thinking it through and grow in this area. God promised to give the land to Israel in Exodus and said he would drive out all the Canaanite tribes including the Jebusites. God told them not to make any deals with the Canaanites. The Jebusites came and pretended to be wanderers from a far place and they made a covenant with them. God made them keep that covenant even though He said he would wipe the Jebusites out.

The root of our problems is trying to bargain with God and we think by offering up some performance on our part will move Gods hand in our direction. God is a good God and we can come direct to Him with our supplications. God is trying to mold His character into our lives so we give our talents, money, time and set our desires and goals based on the kingdom of Christ and the gospel. If we set our hearts and minds hear through Gods word we find ourselves moving towards the center of Gods will. It is the character God needs to put in us before really we are of any use to Him.

So I can be forgiven but still have to fulfill? What if I can't?

it's more likely to be 'won't' rather than can't.

sounds like it's time to sit down with a blank piece of paper in front of you, and a stack of your current bills beside you and see what you actually owe for starters.

write down each bill on the paper, total them up, and figure out how to pay them off. If you keep at it, you will end up with less debit and more money to fulfill that vow that you promised to God.

while you're writing these bills down, figure out if this is something you need to have (food, clothing, shelter, transportation) or something that you saw and just wanted to have.
If you can learn to put the needs first, and scale back on the 'wants', you'll end up in a much better financial situation.

If it is God's purpose, then you will be fine.
If you are fooling yourself or trying to impress God
with your generosity, then you will be destitute.

I don't mean like I promised five dollars but suddenly want a couple of candy bars I mean had an impulse thought to give all of my future earnings.
