However, it doesn't account for historical changes. Who here remembers something called the Black Tom explosion? You know, that act of sabotage by German agents during World War 1 back in 1916, before the USA even entered the war, and which resulted in damage to the Statue of Liberty's outstretched arm, which in turn meant that the 'flame' platform has been closed to the public ever since? Why wasn't this attack mentioned even once back in 2001 after the Twin Towers and Pentagon were attacked? I remember the comparison being made to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, but no one in the media compared it to Black Tom. Why not?

Relevance and (yes, really), memory.

People's remembrance of history is not only not "perfect", it also doesn't work in the linear history book fashion. Rather, it is an act of connecting remembered informations, based on relevance.

In this case: Pearl Harbour was a much larger - and much more relevant - event in U.S. history. It's closer to (living) people's memory, it's closer to the representation in word and image.
The Black Tom explosion is just an anecdote in an ongoing story.

So when publications use an event as a comparison... what would be a better comparison for an unprovoked attack during peacetime... and which events would the readers be more aware of?

Relevance, John, relevance.

I have no memory of Pearl Harbour. I hadn't been born yet. I have also no memory of the Black Tom Explosion... it was even before Pearl Harbour... and I hadn't been born yet.

So all that I can use are records. Traditions.

And here the point of "relevance" comes in again.
One is an event of very big relevance, in historic context as well as in representation. The other is... an anecdote. One is widely known, widely talked about, widely represented in historical and fictional context. The other is a sidenote in a larger story.
One is kept alive in the memory, by constant repitition. The other is forgotten by most, or wasn't even known.

Even if you don't accept the idea of "false memory"... even you would have to be aware that many people do not have any memory of specific things or events.

So what is the relevance of you asking me to check my memory?
