I have to admit...I love allegory! I know, I know, the medieval church abused the method of using scripture as metaphor and incorrectly built doctrine on the extrapolated lesson but I still see a benefit to it especially for devotions.

Robert Hawker used allegory often and his Poor Man's commentary and devotionals are really helpful.

Any recommendations for authors and articles on how to properly use allegory?

Thank you

Pink: An allegory is a parabolic method of conveying instruction, spiritual truths being set forth under material figures. Allegories are in words what hieroglyphics are in printing, both of which abound among the Orientals—Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress is the best-sustained allegory in the English language.

Pink is explaining The Covenant Allegory.

Here is a good allegorical book. - I'm biased though :)

Rescuca: Savior of the Realm

It's the first volume in a series of 3 (Vol. 2 & 3 not yet published).

Question. If you don't think that the correct way to see/uncover the truth of scripture is to see it as allegory (I don't either) why would you not simply abandon it altogether?

i believe that the issue under discussion is whether or not allegory is used in the scriptures. Of course it is! Just about every literary genre is used in scripture, even in rare places hyperbole.

What are the parables spoken by Jesus if not allegory..."The kingdome of heauen is like vnto a graine of mustard seede"...(Matthew 13:31a 1599 Geneva Bible)?

i agree however, that the scriptures are not exclusively allegory --that way be dragons!--. There is narrative, didactive, et. al.
