Perhaps there is a similarity in the Arabic word used, only mistranslated to English. We would see nothing wrong with the title "The Most Excellent".

The most basic principle of Islam is similar to the Shema--"There is no deity save God." (La ilaha illa 'llah) Who is the God whom Muslims and Arab Christians call Allah?

Basically, He is the God of the people of Israel: the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the Prophets of Israel. Muslims regard Abraham as the quintessential monotheist.

The true religion, according to Islam, is submission to God; that is, belief in One God, his Messengers (Prophets), Angels, the hereafter and the Day of Judgment.

The Quran enjoins Muslims to proclaim that the Lord is but One God, to practice regular prayer on a daily basis, to perform good deeds, and to give a portion of their income to the poor.

During the height of the Muslim empire, Jews (and Christians) were, with a few exceptions, allowed to practice their own religion and not forcibly converted.

In fact, the Jews in Andalusia, for example, enjoyed not only freedom of religion, but some even served in the government. There were also many Jewish scholars and translators.

When the Christians reconquered Andalusia, I am sorry to say that the Jews were all forcibly exiled from their homes and Muslims were given the option of baptism, exile, or death.

Islam has somewhat fallen from its high point and there are intolerant fundamentalist sects like the Wahabis in Saudi Arabia. But basically, Islam originally accepts that the Torah, the Psalms, and the Gospel are revealed by God and refers to Jews and Christians as the People of the Book.

A hadith qudsi reports that Allah has said: "My Mercy precedes my wrath" and that these words are inscribed on the Throne (Arsh). Ibn Arabi, the Muslim who is called the Greatest Master (Sheik Al-Akbar) wrote that all people will encounter Mercy and that one can encounter the One God as a Jew and even a Christian.

When mohammed started teaching monotheism, he did NOT pick the God of Abraham. Instead he took the strongest of the gods in the Arabic pantheon - the moon god - and made him "allah." the ONLY god.

Yes he borrowed a lot from Jewish and Christian sources to form his new religion - and totally re-wrote parts of both bibles in the process. (Ishmael being bound - really??)
