I think Jerry Cantrell was the strongest force in AiC...he wrote most of their hits, and I actually prefer his voice to Layne's (most of the time). I think their biggest downfall was trying to be too heavy at times (i.e. "Iron Gland"). But I do agree with everyone that AiC should have received more credit.

Check out "Boggy Depot" and "Degradation Trip" by Cantrell...he wrote some pretty good songs even after Alice had broken up.

I don't listen to AIC anymore because of their negative messages, sometimes even atheistic. I was big on them months ago but I started having negative thoughts, so I quit them. I have no need for them and I would rather stick with Pearl Jam. But I will say Dirt's a good album for anyone who isn't affected by negative messages.

Alice in Chains is a fantastic band and Dirt is a great album. I still don't understand when I meet people who haven't even heard of them- so yes- they're quite underrated. I don't get it. I've always enjoyed how they harmonize and I adore the minor-key sounds they favor.

You know how some bands you listened to in your youth you can no longer stand? I feel that way about Pearl Jam now. The first CD I ever bought was Pearl Jam's Ten, and now I can't even stand to listen to them. However- Alice in Chains has not suffered that fate with me- and neither have The Pixies or Soundgarden (or anything Chris Cornell decides he wants to do)- well and quite a few others- like U2 (because I don't care what anyone says U2 will always be my favorite).

Anyway- I have a solution for the songs you dislike due to the messages- you simply don't listen to those particular songs. No reason to throw out listening to an entire band due to a song or two.

Couple of songs that I still think are great:

Back when I was 12/13 I was a huge fan. Dirt was a sick album, self-titled wasn't bad either.

The thing that got me with them though is they had legit depth in the way Tool had legit depth. Bands like that only make it to the pop world incidentally or sporadically sad to say.

When I bought dirt again when I was 26 I was surprised that the album completely rearranged itself in terms of what caught my attention. When I was a kid it was Down in a Hole it was mostly the stuff from Down in A Hole and back, but the second time this tune really stuck out, the bridge vocal transition caught me massively by surprise as well:
