  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey all,

I'd like to ask you a question in relation to drinking alcohol, or a few actually.
  • Do you drink alcohol?
  • What would be your limit in drinking alcohol?
  • Do you believe according to the scriptures that it is ok to drink and is there a difference in this between men and women?
  • Would you miss drinking alcohol if you stopped today (if applicable).
I promise I come back to answer these myself but would love to read yours also. Thanks. ;)

Yes, occasionally.

My limitations would be never around or when I was in care of my children.
As far as the amount (if this is your question), hmmm ... it is a good question, but I know for me it doesn't take much, to feel relaxed.

Yes, I believe scripture accepts the drinking of alcohol. I am not sure about the remainder of this posted question so I cannot answer fully. Other than alcohol consumption and the abuse of it is a weight factor, men can ussually drink and handle it better than women, if you ask me, but this is not based on the bible only experience.

No, if for what ever reason it became not available, it wouldn't bother me in the least not to have it around.

-----------

I can point to scripture from Noah to Jesus were the use of alcohol is acceptable. But I think as Christians anything that we do in this world once we accept Christ Jesus, we should consider what the outcome would be should we choose to do it. We should be more aware of the impact on eternity.

1 Corinthians 7:28-31 But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.

The Jews were aware of this fact and as Christians I believe we should be too. We should live in this world knowing that we have better things and a way better place in store for us if we remain in Christ Jesus and produce the fruit in which GOD requires. For compared to eternity it is an extreemly short time we have on this earth.

Concerning alcohol:

  • Yes, but not often.
  • I do not drink and drive -- ever.
  • I do not believe we are forbidden to drink, but drunkenness is very much discouraged.
  • I drink so seldom now, it would be easy to give it up. Last year I bought 3 six-packs and still have about 8 bottles left.

1) No, I do not drink. I am a recovering alcoholic.
2) One is too many.
3) Yes, it is okay for some people to drink in moderation, regardless of gender.
4) I don't miss it terribly, because God has given me a much better life in place of it.

Well the topic of wine is a very controversial one. Wine is used in the bible for alcoholic wine and well as non alcoholic. The fruit of the vine is also used to mean wine is its fresh state where the juice has just been extracted. Because of the difference is what wine represents there are scriptures which seem to conflict.

Pro 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Pro 23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
Pro 23:32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

1Ti 5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.
1Ti 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

We see Paul say that it is better not to marry, but because of the sin in the world, for some it is better to marry...

i feel like i have really abused alcohol, and ignored the tendrils of God's loving grasp to steer away from it. In the same spirit of Paul, I would have to agree in my heart that it is better not to drink, and definitely times of fasting and praying and times of not drinking are mandatory. However, i think i like the people that drink very little, like a beer while sitting on a sailboat and watching a sunset. I think Paul noted very well how to test ourselves about drinking: if we can still worship and be filled with the spirit.

But isn't drinking almost like experimenting with sin. I mean the bible strongly condemns drunkenness. So you drink knowing that you don't know exactly how much you can drink before you get drunk. And usually by the time you realize you drank too much the damage is already done. I believe that is why Solomon says that wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging, whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. 2 words to note that he uses are mocker and deceived. Wine makes fun of you after it deceives you.

Alcohol affects everyone differently. You won't know how you'll react until you overindulge. I know this from personal experience. Some drunks get mean, some take unwanted advances, etc., and others lose their natural introverted nature and become more extroverted (me). Some people are more susceptible to the addictive affects of alcohol. For them, it's better for them not to drink at all. As Paul told Timothy, a little wine (maybe a small glass) is fine before bed to help you sleep, settle your stomach, etc. Just as long as one glass doesn't turn into two, or three, etc. I drink so seldom now (nothing so far this year). I am so susceptible to headaches (even migraines) that I do not believe I can have more than one drink per sitting. I'm not sure even one is worth it.

Too funny. My pastor just preached that if you drink you don't fear God.

I'd like to ask you a question in relation to drinking alcohol, or a few actually.
  • Do you drink alcohol?- Yes.
  • What would be your limit in drinking alcohol? don't get drunk.
  • Do you believe according to the scriptures that it is ok to drink and is there a difference in this between men and women? Not only is it OK, but it can be a gift from God.
  • Would you miss drinking alcohol if you stopped today (if applicable). Depends why I stopped.

That would be like saying 'doesn't eating almost like experimenting with sin?' since gluttony is also a sin.

I grew up with the idea that drinking alcohol in any amount was a sin but later I started looking into that and found out that idea was man made and was designed to promote a social agenda. Being drunk is looked down upon but drinking itself is not a sin.

  • Yes I drink alcohol.
  • I only have one glass of wine or 2 bottles of Mike's/Jack Daniels Downhome punch. I don't have it that often, excluding communion it's only maybe once every month or so.
  • Yes I believe it is ok in moderation. We are not to be drunk. There are some MAJOR health benefits (specifically the reservatrol in red wine (you should sip it to get the best effect), and drinking Champagne can help prevent the deterioration of brain cells due to oxidative stress. A study has shown that it may help the brain cope with the trauma of stroke, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease. In the wise words from 1 Timothy 5:23, "No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities." It's not juice he's referring to I'm sure.
  • I wouldn't stop because then I would miss communion. Excluding that, the only thing I would miss is the social element. Socially it can help stir conversation if you are a Christian and drinking (in a social setting - not like a keg party or something).

Something you have to realize about the time of Jesus was that their wine was not the wine we know today.

Wine back then was a very weak alcoholic beverage, mostly water with some alcohol. People would typically drink it in place of water because the water had a habit of containing bacteria, viruses, etc. They didn't have the clean flowing tap water we have the pleasure of these days.

Not to mention with the industrial revolution across the globe, alcohol has only gotten stronger, and the ability to purchase large quantities has gone up as well. This has led to an increase in alcoholics in industrialized countries, and all the problems that follow that.

Personally, I'll be turning 21 this year. But I've also been dealing with an alcoholic mother for the last 8 years of my life. It's terrible watching a loved one go through it, and it's worse when you're stuck in the same house with them. I think God has shown me this though, as a warning of what could happen to me if I were to overindulge in my drink.

James 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

If this is true then what of the account of Jeremiah 35? Why would the Recabite family refuse to drink grape juice?

I personally believe it is acceptable and like anything else should be done, if done at all, in moderation.

1 Corinthians 7:31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.

So then, Jesus turned the water into wine. Was it possible that someone could have gotten drunk from the wine Jesus made? If so then would Jesus making the wine be a temptation for people to overdrink. Jesus was omnipotent and if anyone was going to get drunk he would have foreknowledge. Would Jesus then create alcoholic wine which would have tempted allot of people to keep drinking and eventually get drunk. Imagine Jesus telling the father, "yea, i made the wine but i didnt tell them to drink so much". That would be irresponsible. But if no, then what do we get from it.

Drink but don't get drunk is like saying to sleep on the same bed with another's husband or wife and not commit adultery. Its not that it can't be done but its like flirting with sin. The bible says to flee all appearances of evil. Because something appears evil it does not mean you will get caught up in it, yet the bible still says to flee. God in his wisdom does not want us flirting with sin. You might be able to drink and not get drunk but another Christian may not and when a church says that its OK to drink but don't get drunk it's putting its entire membership at risk.

You have to be careful about that kind of logic because it opens the door to all kinds of legalistic theology. These anti-alcohol-in-any-amount ideas came mainly from the Women's Temperance Movement of the 19th Century. Their influence eventually brought about Prohibition, which was really the genesis of organized crime in America.

Believe it or not I am Italian and I don't drink any alcohol.....I know what your thinking.....YEAHHHHH RIGHT! seriously....NO Drinking!

I have had 3 glasses of wine in my life.

My family has vineyards in the mother country. And they also produced their own wine when they came to the US, years ago.

So i have no limits because I don't drink at all. I just think it brings out the worst of people and can also bring down the best of people.

Just my thoughts.

God be with you all!

Matthew 11:19 "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners."' But wisdom is proved right by her actions."

Evil thoughts of others is dangerous territory in my book. Many Jews condemned Christ Jesus, again by the judgements of man and upon the appearances of man. Non of which GOD will judge HIS own People by.

Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer that too much of anything is never a good thing. Alcohol does damage to many people and not just to those who abuse it. But there are many who do not abuse it, and there use of it is not sin.

I drink and I drink around my kids. Maybe a few beers with my brother while watching a race or a football game. I would never drive drunk with my kids. If I drink with my kids my wife drives. I have in my younger days gotten very drunk but never around my kids. Do I beleive that drinking is bad - yes if you can't control it. There are people that can't control there actions while drinking. I can control my actions so is this wrong?
