In another thread, a member of the LDS stated that they believe in abstaining from alcohol, coffee, or tea.

Is this true? What do they base this practice on?

Is it a serious matter? In other words, do some partake and some do not? And if one does, does it matter? Or are there consequences?
Abstaining from these three is how they interpret the "Word of Wisdom," a supposed revelation given to Joseph Smith. Many LDS go even further to include any drinks containing caffeine. LDS do not use coffee in their recipes for cakes or frostings either. Yes, it is important. One of the consequences might be not getting a temple recommend, but you are not disfellowshipped or excommunicated for it.

Doctrine & Covenants, Section 89
1 A WORD OF WISDOM, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—
spacer.gif

2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—
spacer.gif

3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.
spacer.gif

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—
spacer.gif

5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.
spacer.gif

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.
spacer.gif

7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
spacer.gif

8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.
spacer.gif

9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.
spacer.gif

10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—
spacer.gif

11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.
spacer.gif

12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;
spacer.gif

13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.
spacer.gif

14 All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth;
spacer.gif

15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger.
spacer.gif

16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground—
spacer.gif

17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.
spacer.gif

18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
spacer.gif

19 And shall find wisdom and great teasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
spacer.gif

20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
spacer.gif

21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

This comes from a revelation known as the Word of Wisdom, which is essentially a health code. It is found in the Doctrine and Covenants section 89. It is a couple of pages long, so I won't post it here. I recommend you do read the full text because it is almost always erroneously quoted (even by LDS).

As part of the historical background, the WoW was initially given as advice and not as a commandment, except to the leadership of the church. Over time, this was extended until the prohibitions in the WoW were formally made commandments by Joseph F. Smith in 1905.

In order for a person to be baptised, hold a calling, receive the priesthood, participate in a priesthood ordinance or receive a temple recommend a person must be living the WoW. The is determined during an Interview with the Bishop.

Not living the WoW is not cause for any church disciplinary action, nor does it prevent someone from taking the sacrament (communion).

The Essential prohibitions in the WoW include:
- Alchohol
- Tobacco
- Tea & Coffee (described as 'hot drinks' in the revelation)
- Harmful drugs (by implication)

Some more zealous LDS have chosen to include caffeinated beverages, chocolate, red meat and white flour to this list. Whilst the WoW is open to interpretation on these matters, using them is not considered breaking the WoW.

It should be noted that the WoW is a modern-day revelation for today and does not directly relate to any biblical practice other than by inference, despite what some LDS may say.

The majority of active LDS live the WoW. I would say >98%. The number of less-active LDS that live the WoW is still high, but it does depend upon several factors such as how long since they were active.

lared, swart and I discussed this topic quite a bit on another thread recently. I can't remember the name of the thread but maybe Swart does and He could post a link to it?

Frankie

I was thinking that myself. However, it's 2:50AM here and I can't think straight to remember. Everything is blurring. Must sleep...

Health code?

Are these items injurious to ones health?
If you are referring to alcohol, coffee, and tea, my answer would be that they can be. For people with stomach problems or chronic gastritis, it would be best to avoid them. For people with irritable bowel syndrome, the same would hold true. For others, moderation is a good idea. Too much alcohol can destroy brain cells, impair judgment, and cause cirrhosis of the liver.

Look at what alcohol can do to your liver:

We abstain because of Commandment.
We abstain because of Health.
We abstain because of the Spiritual Benefits.

You can find many articles on the WoW at any LDS website.

The word of wisdom is a "principle with a promise". "And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; and shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures; and shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint. A said, it's from Doctrine and Covenants 89. Still, this health law never mentions coffee or tea specifically, only "hot drinks." Mormon General authority George Q. Cannon included soup in this prohibition when he said, "We must not permit them to drink liquor or hot drinks, or hot soups or to use tobacco or other articles that are injurious" (Journal of Discourses 12:223).
